OP. I have a set of what I believe to be walnut grips that have the checkerd double diamond U.S. pattern on them. They are in new condition but I'm sure they could be antiqued.  I would be willing to donate them to your project if you would use them.  Let me know

I may have missed it but have you thought about turning over the barrel or the casing to see if it was murder weapon or if the serial number shows that it was stolen?

That could be really helpful, I'll document the antiquing process,  thanks

I'm working on getting the gun magnafluxed to expose the serial number....  and I will be fully researching the guns history... if it does wind up that it was purloined, I will gladly re-unite her with her original owner (if still alive). or the owners family, and in  either event I would offer to purchase her from them...

As to submitting the barrel/casing, I think you may have a few misconceptions as to what the capabilities of forensic analysis is re: ballistics.... this barrel is so corroded there is no possible way you would be able to match a bullet from before it was fired and a bullet from afterwards.... Additionally I swapped out the extractor and firing pin, and the breach face has minor tooling marks from the process of driving out the seized pin and extractor....

The casing which was found in the firearm had significant mechanical forces applied to it to remove it from the gun, which combined with the corrosion, would make any markings meaningless

there is no way in hell anyone is going to match this gun to anything nefarious... its just not possible.

You oughta win a prize or something.  For diligence and patience in keeping traditions alive... or for most outstanding use of the word "nefarious", if nothing else.

The OP has stated that he is going to have it magnafluxed in order to find the original serial number.  I think we can work with the assumption that he will then take care of any legalities in regards to this firearm.  He has already demonstrated his intelligence in this thread, so I think that is a safe assumption.  Personally, I would rather not see this thread turn into a legal discussion.

There have been a couple 'relic' pistols that have hit GB.
You can always check those out.

Let the ATF go after GOD for altering the readability of the serial number.

There's a gun show next weekend . . . I just may have to find an old 45 that was buried in the mud for 50 years to resurrect.  I mean, how hard can it be?!!

Shot the new barrel this time around... the hardness tester hasn't shown up yet.

Also, the barrel link needs to be replaced in the original barrel (the slide is sitting slightly too far forward in lockup
