Evening gents,
I have an STI Trojan that came with a right-handed safety and I'd like to install an ambidextrous safety on it in the event that I ever want/need to use the gun left-handed.  I was told that it requires some fitting to install one.  Being something like a safety, I'm a bit reluctant to mess with it myself but I hate going to a gunsmith unless I really need to, and I just enjoy doing things myself.  Has anyone ever completed this operation before?  Exactly how difficult is it?

Thanks

I installed one on my Kimber.  I wanted a Wilson ambi-safety but opted for a Kimber instead.  From the research I gathered before doing this, most people had problems when the safety was made by another manufacturer.  It was true when I replaced the BGS on my Kimber with a Wilson.  Bad idea.  Went with a stainless Kimber BGS and had absolutely no problems installing it.  There are "how tos" on the net.  The 1911 forum has some good info on the installation as well.

Remove the plunger spring so the safety is free to move without the resistance of the spring/plunger.

If you remove the grip safety, then slide the MSH back into place, and work under a strong light, you can see just where and how much metal to remove. (Keep in mind if you do this you'll have a little over-travel with the hammer, which must be cocked).

Check your fit often.

If I've lied to you, someone will be along shortly to set me straight.

Good link.

I would also recommend using a STI ambi safety for a little easier time.
