As far as I can tell it's just there to make it that much harder to reassemble your pistol. Please tell me what I'm missing here.
It's just one of the things the gun has that the other guy failed to mention before the trade. Thanks guy!
I was over on the bushing fitting thread since I'll be needing one should I return the gun to GI spring plug status.... |
| check the recoil guide rod for a small hole... if one is there, you lock the slide back, insert a small "L" shaped pin (bent paper clip) from the bottom, and slowly release the slide... the pin will trap the guide rod, spring and plug... remove the slide from frame, and lift out the trapped rod/spring/plug... you replace the same way, loading barrel first with bushing already inserted in slide, then captured assembly... replace on frame, replace slide stop, retract slide, the pin will fall out, allow the slide to move forward... you don't have to mess with bushing wrench or flying spring plugs |

It's got a bushing fellas, and there is no hole in the front. It's not a bull barrel. It's also a GI recoil spring guide..Perhaps I'm wrong and its not reverse. It's got a lip, or flange so it only installs from the rear and retains itself against the slide, not the bushing. It's weird and I don't know WTF. The end diameter where it protrudes out under the bushing is also larger than a standard GI plug, and the bushing is made to fit it. I wish I had camera handy but my wife is out of town with it. I'm looking at pics all over the net and I cant find anything to match it.
Now I'm seeing it's kind of what is on an Officers model...Only thos require some kind of slide modding and I'm failing to see how the slide is cut. It looks standard. Edit: crappy cell phone pictures inbound, your help on this is very much appreciated. |

You should be able to use a regular Commander spring plug in that case. Truly? Is a commander plug different from a Gov't plug, like larger diameter? I tried my Gov't model plug just to see and it was not captured by the bushing. Hence my belief that I need a new bushing to go back to standard setup here. That would be fantastic. |
| Yes, it looks like the radius of the bushing was opened up so the special spring retainer would prevent it from clocking. If nothing in the slide has been changed, you can use a regular retainer and standard bushing. I've never seen this particular set-up before. |
| FWIW, I have an older Clark compensated gun that uses a plug like that. For takedown, it was like most other guns except you had to control the spring as you slid the whole slide assembly off the frame. On mine, it's only a little tricky, and a lot easier than a standard 1911. |
