I went in to the gun store Saturday meaning to pick up a new FDE Glock. I spotted a Used Springfield TRP Operator for $1080, which I thought seemed like a great price. I ended up buying it instead after I picked it up, couldn't put it down Anyways, it looked in perfect shape in the store but I noticed a few nicks once I got home and have some questions. Also, I took a lot of pictures and I'm trying to get an idea of the round count, hopefully you guys can help. The first time I took the pistol apart, it was extremely tight and I barely got it apart, the 2nd time was a lot easier, so I don't think the first owner took it apart. Also, the barrel was dirty, which supports this idea. I asked the clerk what the story was on the gun, he said it was from a guy that buys a lot of guns, shoots them a few months, then trades them for something new. So hopefully this gun didn't have many rounds through it. I put 200 rounds through it today and it is a freaking tack driver, I've never had a 1911 but I hit a 12'' target 5/7 times at 100 yards the first time, then 7/7 times the 2nd time I could always shoot Glock's extremely well, especially 34/35's, but this is another animal entirely. I couldn't miss with it Now I get what all the fuss is about 1911's, they shoot great, especially coming off of an M&P, which was my last pistol. Now for some questions. First off, any guess on the round count? I took pictures of all the wear areas so you guys can tell me what you think. 2nd, what is up with the bottom of the magwell? It is scratched all the way around the bottom on the edge, it kind of bothers me, is there a way I can replace it without getting the whole pistol re-coated by Springfield? 3rd, there is a tiny dent in the ejection port, its barely noticable and the pistol ran 100%, should I do anything about it or leave it be? 4th, did I get a pretty good deal? I see the pistols going for $1450 new online, so I feel like $1080 is a good price even though it has a few cosmetic flaws. Thanks in advance, I love this gun and I look forward to spending time on this section of the sight learning everything I can about 1911's, I know nothing about them, all I know is that my TRP shoots like a dream and feels like one too. Thanks Pics: |

Nice 1911 ,the pistol looks like it was shot very little. The parts that have the finish worn off was probably from the asshat original owner who didn't care about a fine pistol.I see alot of that even on web vids where the guy just about throws the pistol on a table or something. They make touch up pens for that reason ,and the ding on the slide I wouldn't mess with it you might make it look worse. Over all it is a very nice pistol and if it's that accurate even better for you. |

1. Inside of the slide hood area is a good clue. It is either fit perfect or has less than 500 rounds through it, just an opinion.
2. It was shot off of a table, hard surface to steady aim. Maybe concrete? 3. That took a fair blow. Something stupid defiantly happed here. Dropped it or moron gun smithing of some kind. If function is 100% live with it. 4. I would have bought that if I need a third one.............. |

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to live with the dent, but I'm going to replace the magwell. I also noticed it has an idiot scratch, but it didn't break through the surface of the finish and its barely noticeable, so I'll live with it too. Maybe one day I'll have S.A. refinish it for me

Take the $70-80 and put it towards 3-4 good mags. |

Looks like a low round count to me. My TRP has had around 3-4K rounds fired thru it and it shows more wear. The Amory coat finish Springfield uses is not very tough compared to some other finishes and will show slide wear on the mating surfaces. I would replace the mag well with a Smith & Alexander mag well just to get rid of the ILS. The TRP frame is not beveled where the mag well meets the frame so you might get an OK fit, but it will not be as good as a custom fit. The stock TRP mag well is two piece, but I don't think you can buy just the lower portion. It looks like it had a light on it at one time from the marks on the rail. I would not worry about the dent in the ejection port on the slide unless it caused a malfunction.
Shoot the hell out of it, they are great pistols and I think you did very well on the price. In my area that pistol would go for more than you paid for it since they are kinda hard to find. |

Look on the rear of the mainspring housing, there should be a hole for a two pronged key that you use to lock the action. Your pistol should have come with the key(s), if it didn't you won't be able to lock/unlock it. The lock will prevent the hammer from being cocked, thereby preventing operation of the pistol. I have never heard of any problems with the ILS locking up the action as you may read about the S&W revolver actions locking up. The internals are different from the "standard" set up so that is why I usually change them out and if you choose to replace yours you will need to buy the internal parts as well. I believe that you can buy the complete assembly from Brownell's or directly from Smith and Alexander.
The Smith & Alexander magwell comes blue or stainless. The blue, while not an exact match will look OK on your TRP. |

Quoted: Is the ILS something akin to the S&W internal lock? I looked up some videos, would replacing the mainspring/magwell with a one piece be hard to do? Not at all... But since I'm not really a fan of flared magwells, if it were me, I'd go with http://item.brownells.com/brands/guncrafter-products/1911-auto-lanyard-mainspring-housing-lanyard-mainspring-housing.htm and some new grips. |

Hopefully you're not selling it only because of the cosmetic flaws. It's a gun, and they're meant to be used - which inevitably means it will look worn. At that price which you got it I just hope you don't regret it when you want it again in the future.
Why get rid of this TRP you got for a good deal, for a Sig without a deal? Might as well keep it and have both. |
|
keep the trp; you'll probably nevdr find a deal like that again.
i'm on the fence about ditching my ils/buying a new msh. on the trp the magwells look like the openings match up. maybe that's the difference between ed brown and s/a. then again, maybe i'll just get the recommended guncrafters msh. my armorycoated trp has a hole for a lanyard/cord to secure the weapon. that appeals to me as the wife fell in love w/some lake property and i could see making this trp w/cord my boat/coastal gun! |

Held a P220 today, going to try and flip this so I can get the Sig ![]() I put 200 rounds through it today and it is a freaking tack driver, I've never had a 1911 but I hit a 12'' target 5/7 times at 100 yards the first time, then 7/7 times the 2nd time This should be reason enough to keep the TRP. You're in a 1911 forum so you know what the responses will be, but hey, it's your gun - do with it what you want. |
| dude 220s are easy to find i have seen alot of them but the trp i have never seen the TRP in the used gun section of my local shops. your down on this gun just because someone has used it. or at least carried it alot of places. keep the TRP you will always find 220s |
