Right now I'm in the process of looking at all my options for the next 1911 purchase. I was set on a railed 1911 for my next but seeing as how its nearly impossible to find a mc operator, I started pricing out a "custom" springfield. First looking for info on the range officer model and how it compares to say a TRP with say the frame to slide fitment, mim parts etc.
Upgrades to the range officer would include: Harrison sights: 100 Extended ambi thumb safety: 100 SA one piece magwell main spring housing: 180 Stripple front strap:135 Maybe front cocking serrations: 100 Refinish: 80-150 So pretty much would be taking a roughly $800 1911 and adding $6-800 in upgrades. I'm looking for ideas as to whether the RO is a good starting pistol for the upgrades?? I know I could pick up a TRP for this price, but I like the idea of having a 1911 with what I want. |

Recognize that the TRP and RO have the same number of MIM parts––basically everything small.
If you're going to spend all that money, I'd add a $200 trigger job which changes out the fire control parts for tool steel, and you can pick the trigger pull. The trigger on my RO is pretty creepy, and heavy––about 5 lbs, which is within spec, but kinda high for a target-type 1911. |

I had thought about a trigger job but figured I'd leave it go to later down the road. Do ya know how the frame to slide fitment compares between the two? |

Per SA they are fit to the same level of quailty. My RO was/is tight in frame/slide and barrel/bushing bushing/slide. Tighter than my buds TRP, but his does have 4 times the ammount of ammo down range. If your good with files and can read instructions you can cut some costs by fitting the parts yourself. |

The tolerances on my RO are extremely tight. My trigger is light and crisp, breaking at around 3 lbs. There is no creep in mine whatsoever. The action is super slick, and the lockup is nice and tight. Side by side with my $1200 Kimber, the Range Officer shoots better and is more accurate.
I love it. The ONLY change I made was to add a set of 'VZ' Operator Grips (Olive Green). Its a great deal for the money IHMO. Made in USA match-grade goodness. |

Have you thought about a Springfield Custom Carry? http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/7603/springfieldcustomcarry.jpg That's nice. I don't know that I've ever seen this model before, guess I'll be looking into it now too. What grips are the those? I really like them |

The Range Officer is made in USA, and is a nice 1911 for the $$$...not sure what your point is here...

| I have one and love it. The only upgrade I want to do at this point is checker the front strap. I prefer a rougher grip, and with the smoother grips I have I think that about 25lpi would be just about perfect. The trigger is fantastic on mine as well. Smooth pull and a crisp break. Side by side with my Sig 1911 I can tell the difference. |

Unless something has changed recently. |

I would rather set my hair on fire than put one of those rear sight in a pistol. Thats all I have to add to this thread. Any suggestions on a sight then? It was the only sight I could find for a bomar style cut. I cant figure out why someone would buy a pistol with adjustable sights only to plan on putting a fixed sight in it. Theyre gruesome looking, no matter which one you buy. With all the choices in 1911s out there I would find one with the basic features I wanted out of the box. |

Theyre gruesome looking, no matter which one you buy. With all the choices in 1911s out there I would find one with the basic features I wanted out of the box. My main carry gun is a Springfield Loaded that came with adjustable sights. I bought it on a whim because it was a stainless NM Springer and my LGS never had much in terms of stock. I had zero intentions of carrying it. Ever. But after shooting it a lot, I realized I really really liked it- the feel, the balance, etc. But I didn't like the sights that much. So I replaced them. And after shooting about 200 rounds through it one afternoon, it hit me like a sack full of hammers that this was the only pistol I have owned that has not suffered a malfunction. Even my Glock jammed once. But not my Loaded. I also realized that even though my range trips were becoming rarer and rarer, that I still could shoot my 1911 at the same level as when I was practicing all the time. The Glock, not so much. So with a reliable weapon that I enjoy shooting and can do so accurately, my Loaded became my primary carry. I didn't set out to change the sights on mine; it just happened. If I could do it over again, I would probably just wait for Loaded with fixed sights. |

It is true that most of the budget 1911's from SA are made in Brazil....however the Range Officer, Operator, and others are made in the 'Custom Shop' in Illinois, US of A.

The TRP etc are fit and put together by people in an assembly line type of setup. |

This is what I got on my SA RO:
Harrison Trijicon rear sight Dawson precision Trijicon front sight Ed Brown ajustable trigger Ed Brown Hardcore firing pin C&S Commander style hammer This is future upgrades that I will do to my SA RO: Ed Brown extended thumb safety Ed Brown slide stop Harrison Extreme service hammer strut For now. The SA RO was as close to a TRP that I was going to be able to afford. But not complaining, I love my SA RO, best made 1911 I have ever owned! |
| I have had both and the RO is gone. I was going to dump more money into it than I would pay for a TRP. I like the Armory Kote finish much better than the RO's parkerized finish. The trigger on my NM serial numbered RO was 6 pounds, which was terrible for a target gun. It was accurate as hell though. The TRP is accurate also. |
