A buddy of mine checked out a 1911 & we are trying to decide if this is normal. This refers to a Series 70. The hammer is at full cock and the thumb safety is engaged. If the grip safety is depressed and the trigger pulledd, should the thumb safety drop and the hammer fall. It falls to the firing pin, not half cock. Thoughts?
Thanks in andvance. |

So what you're saying is that the thumb safety is on, the grip safety is depressed and the trigger pulled and the hammer says put. When the thumb safety is disengaged the hammer drops all the way. And this is without the trigger pulled or the grip safety depressed?

If that's the case then the trigger moved the sear while the thumb safety was on but not enough to drop the hammer. Once the thumb safety was off then sear released the rest of the way letting the hammer fall. Not sure why it wouldn't catch on the half cock notch unless the hammer doesn't have a captive half cock. |

Nope, what I mean is if you pick it up in a normal firing grip (grip safety pushed in) AND with the thumb safety engaged (ON) and dry fire it, the thumb safety disengages as you pull the trigger and the hammer drops all the way to firing pin. (not to half cock)
Basically, it's like if you forget to sweep the thumb safety, you would probably get a shot off. Don't know, didn't shoot it. Thanks. |
