As for the SKS thread I started I'll ask the same questions here. I'm in the market for a 1911 and I've been doing lots of research to try and figure out which one is best for me. In short I can't figure out which route to take
I want one for home defense but I also want to take it out to the range and enjoy shooting it. I'm willing to a pay a decent amount but I don't want to spend a fortune on it. Just figured I'd ask here. What models and/or companies would you recommend? Thanks for any advice. |

Home defense? Range shooter? Are you going to CCW? Don't want to spend a fortune... what's a fortune to you? $500, $1,000, $1,600, $2,500?
Springfield Armory is reputed to be good and their customer service is good. Ruger is reputed to make a nice 1911 with good customer service. Dan Wesson makes a nice 1911 but it might be out of your price range. Sig 1911's are gaining a good reputation. |

I've finally narrowed my list down to these and in this order:
1. Dan Wesson Valor Black 2. Dan Wesson Valor Stainless 3. Dan Wesson Heritage RZ-45 4. Sig TACOPS (not the kit but the pistol with all the upgrades) I started out looking for the Ruger SR1911 and Springfield Range Officer but they weren't in the LGS. The LGS had a nice Kimber Custom TLE II but I figured I better research it first. Looking on the internet I sort of moved up the 1911 ladder and I'm now deciding between the four above. I hope my tax refund gets here soon or I'l be looking at Nighthawks, Wilson's, and Les Baers. Trying to decide on a 1911 is harder to do than figuring which AR15 to get. |

Agreed. I think I've narrowed it down to getting a SIG and the tacops one really appeals to me. Now i just have to figure out what the MSRP is for it. I went to the LGS earlier today and they had the TACOPS listed for $1019. The MSRP on the Sig site is $1213. I'm going to think about it for a couple of days but I think I might make an offer for $950. Another LGS has a black Springfield TRP that looked & handled real nice but they wanted $1459. Decisions, decisions. |
| Locally I found out I can get the tacops for 1150. Does that seem reasonable. If the gun is as nice as I've heard I could be persuaded to drop that amount but then again since I don't own a 1911 I'm wondering if I shouldn't just get a cheaper one to start off with. As you said, decisions, decisions.... |

As you said, decisions, decisions.... $1150 is only $63 below MSRP. Not a good deal to my way of thinking. Keep in mind you have to pay sales tax also. The $950 I might offer is my OTD (out the door price after taxes). The most I am willing to pay for this particular gun is $1000 but I hope I can get it for less. The way I am looking at it if I have to go over $1000, I might as well get a Dan Wesson RZ-45 Heritage from Bud's for $1126 + $25 FFL fee. |

There's a lot to be said for being able to put your eyes and hands on a gun before buying it, even more so with 1911s. I've seen some new guns that I would have been quite unhappy with, had I ordered them sight unseen first. Ken - You make a very valid point regarding the 1911s. The more pistols I handle from shop to shop, the more I am noticing slight variations in quality even within the exact same manufacturer / model. The polymer guns I've purchased on the internet were at a much lower price point so the risk of getting burned was less consequential. My personal problem with handling these 1911s at the local stores is that I have now doubled my original budget. I made the mistake of checking out a Springfield TRP that was absolutely perfect. Thank god no shops around my neck of the woods carry Nighthawks. |

Got the Sig Tacops today and I'm happy this far though I haven't yet shot it. I spent some time learning the mechanics and how to field strip it. It had a good bit of oil on it.
I got it for 960 before taxes which I felt was decent. It came with four mags and a carry case |
