Okay I've been out of the 1911 loop for a little over a year now. I have shot 1911a majority of my life owned several kimbers. And a nighthawk I would give my left nut to get back.
Anyways I went to the plastic aide of pistols about a year ago and it'd not working out for me. I traded my nighthawk for a pvs-14. I still own a kimbers raptor 2. But its been put through the ringer and well I need a new 1911 for carry and do all. Has to be a 5". Just looking at what people suggest since I've been out of the loop for awhile. 800-1k God how I miss her

Don't want a duty TRP. The railed ones are bull barrel and adjustable inbord sights. An addon rail might do it, though, I think the OP had a dawson?
Less than the Professional, and the MC Operator is recommended. Still though, I think the Pro is the way to go. No point in cheaping out on a duty weapon. Going in harms way makes it more important than a CCW where you try to stay out ot it as much as possible. |

The Pro is a 2.6k gun and they have a waiting list of about 12 months to have made... because they're busy fufilling contracts for the Marines, the FBI, ect.
There's a pro conversion on GB for 2.2k (asking price, it keeps not selling), not the real thing, but Springfield Armory Custom Shop is up there with the best... and they're the ones that make the Pros. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=263341212 Hard to find though. If you're looking for a decent duty gun, you can pick up a non-railed TRP for about 1.1k and add on a dawson rail, and you'd be a fair bit of the way there. I just bought an MC Operator (modified) from a LE and sold it to another cop who'll now use it as a duty gun. If you're not 'just a civvie' I hear you can call up Springfield Custom and get things a bit sooner, but that could just be rumor. http://www.10-8performance.com/pages/Choosing-a-1911-for-Duty-Use.html That's a good read, but I think you might have checked it out already. :) Notice that 10-8 usually makes their builds on Springfields as well (The actual 10-8's rather than the nighthawk line, as far as I can tell, not an expert, just noticed the frames used). This is the part: For a factory light rail gun, the Springfield Loaded Full-Size MC Operator (PX9105MLP), with the green and black paint job, is a leading option. It bridges the quality between the Loaded and TRP grade 1911s and is an excellent value. These guns exhibit excellent overall build quality and tend to run well out of the box. The correct Picatinny spec light rail, corrosion resistant finish and overall configuration of the MC Operator lends itself well to duty use. The TRP models with the standard dust cover (PC9107LP Stainless, PC9108LP Armory Kote) are also excellent choices for a traditional format gun. If you want to bridge the gap between a full blown hand built custom and a lower priced/entry level production 1911, the Springfield Professional is an excellent choice. I have seen a lot of these guns and have a few myself. Statistically, there are more of the Professional Models out in real street service than any other factory custom 1911, so the quirks are pretty well worked out. They have consistently improved since the original run of guns, and overall are very nicely done. They offer cleanly executed checkering (some of the best on a production type gun), a nice beavertail fit, a blended S&A mag well, premium grade components, real Novak sights with Trijicon inserts, and excellent accuracy from the match fit Nowlin barrel. These guns typically work very well right out of the box, though they should be monitored closely during their break in period. It is available in a standard dust cover format (PC9111) and with the shortened Operator light rail frame (PC9111LR). If you find one of these on the secondary market, it is preferable to pick a later production specimen that has the Trijicon sight inserts and pinned front sight. Very early (low three digit CRG 1xx serial numbers) guns had IWI sight inserts and no pins in the front sights. While these were good guns, the sight inserts do not wear very well and you will want to replace them with Trijicons. Each run of guns differs as to whether their ejectors are pinned or glued, but the Springfield Custom Shop will pin the ejector if you desire. |

In the 800-1000 range I'd get a used TRP or a used MC Operator. If you want new, Sig Tacops. Maybe. They just don't have the proven track record as the Marine Corp Operator or the Tactical Response Pistol (MC Op/TRP), let alone the Professional. But if you absolutely need new in that price range, it is nice feeling. |

Among the units that use Springfield Customs are FBI HRT and some FR and MSOB Marines. For duty use - price no object, they're still at the top of my "short-list." A lot of custom makers will build you a work of art, but Springfield Custom shop guns have a known record for fighting. That being said - given what you started out with - why not start with a NightHawk GRP and tweak it to be similar to the 10-8? The GRP is similar, and can be customized, and it has an integral railed dustcover. As others have mentioned, given how highly you seem to feel about the 10-8, and had a light mounted on it - the Dawson light rail is sadly discontinued. Perhaps someone will pick it up and re-produce it - I actually prefer them to railed dustcovers - but until that happens, for a light mount, they're a better option. ~Augee |

They also offer a few stainless steel models, which make a lot of sense. Personally I don't like getting expensive permanent finishes straight from the factory. Invariably there will be a sharp edge somewhere that they missed, or something that I want changed. I like to shoot a blued gun for a while and then have it sent for chrome or something after I'm sure it's where I want it. |
