So I've owned my RIA gov. for a few years now, replaced almost everything internal except the barrel & firing pin with Wilson Combat. I have an 18 or maybe 18 1/2 lbs recoil spring. Sometimes when I chamber that 1st round the round gets stuck in a 4 O'clock 11 O'clock position and even sometimes while firing the damn thing. So far no ammo seems to be better than another with this issue. I’ve had my feed ramp polished up by a gunsmith not my self and it really made no difference. Other than the fact that it’s a low end 1911 what can be causing this? I was thinking possibly the spring is too heavy and is slamming the round so hard it jumps straight up the feed ramp. I don’t shoot this one very often only about 600-800 rounds have passed through it. I hear a lot from people that I need to shoot a couple thousand rounds out of it before I worry about anything but that just seems weird to me.

Have you noticed it happening with stock mags or does it happen with any mags you use?
Did the problems start just after the new spring or no?

does it with my stock act mag and my second act mag i picked up and with my 10 round Chip McCormick. funny thought if i remove the 1st round from the mags it seems to have a lot less trouble with the initial chambering of the 1st round. its always done it since i bought it, the stock recoil spring is 18 or 18 1/2 lbs as well thats the only reason why i bought such a heavy spring in the 1st place. i e-mailed the manufacture a couple months after i bought it and they never responded so i just give them the finger and press on.

5" Govt model stock spring weight is 16 lbs [or 16.5 depending on who you talk to]

It may be several issues, a too tight extractor claw, weak mag springs, and a overly strong recoil spring which, when put together, can slam the round straight into the feed ramp instead of at an angle as the round pops up and the rim slides under the extractor claw.

What bullets are you using, lead or jacketed. Lead has more of a tendency to "stick" then jacketed.

fmj ball ammo, ive never been too fond of lead rounds for a .45. the colt gov is 16 lbs right? im 90% sure RIA models have heavier springs than anyone else uses. think it could just be the spring? guess i could try swaping it out and see how it does.

I have heard excellent things about their customer service.  However, after you replaced a bunch of parts they are not going to help you too much.  I don't believe it is the feed ramp though.  My 9mm had a couple of hiccups until between 500 to 1k rounds.  Then it was gtg.

i contacted them before i swapped out anyhting, it was still a brand new pistol that only saw the range 2 maybe 3 times. i assumed it was just a break in thing but after this many rounds i cant imagine so. not that ive shot it much but its not fun when i have so many FTF issues.

Try a 16 lb recoil spring and jacketed bullets and buy a Mec Gar mag. I've found they work very well with FMJ rounds. Can you remove the slide and easily slip a round behind the extractor and have it "hang there" or is it a tight fit? A Quality extractor with a properly cut extractor claw can make a big difference also.

Did you tune your extractor when you installed it? If not I bet that's where your problem is.

i havent changed my extractor yet or the extractor spring, would it need tuning otherwise?

Extractor spring?

Try tuning your extractor. That alone could account for your problems.

OP,
If you run your fingernail down the feed ramp do you feel any roughness at all? I know it was polished by a gunsmith but there are smiths and there are smiths like in any field. If it is sufficiently smooth, you might try a different mag brand. I've had zero problems with Wilson 47s and Mec-Gar 7 round. After that it is likely that the extractor is damaged, has a burr on the claw, or requires tuning as has been noted.

Don't worry too much about the feed ramp. It does not need to be polished or even especially smooth.
With your brass sounding luke it is not lined up straight when it jams it definately sounds like the eztractor. Take it apart and see if a loaded round slips between the breech face and extractor easily. Then see if it holds it. It might need a radius ground on it. I will link to a better set of instructions when I get home. Linking from my iphone is too tough.

You can remove the extractor temporarily to see if the problem continues.   If it does, the root cause lies elsewhere.

It is sounding as if the frame feedramp is improperly machined, or it could be the bullets bumping past the slide stop on their way up the feedpath.

1. How did the gun shoot when it was stock..before any work was done too it?

If the firing pin stop is clocking it also might cause this.

Here is a link to a page on the 1911.org site about tuning the extractor.
