So I'm looking into getting my first 1911 come January or February and I'm sure this question comes up a lot. Would the Colt 1991 government be a good choice or possibly a Springfield of some sort. Would these be good choices for a first 1911? I hear good stories and bad. Also saw a Dan wesson for $1500???
Thanks!

I have a Colt 1991 Commander.  It is a great gun.  HOWEVER, I'd suggest a Rock Island as a starter/beater 1911 (the Tactical for $450).  It is not something I'd use for a customization, but not bad to learn the platform to see if you want to go in further.  They have a good rep for basic reliability and decent customer service, especially for an entry level price.

My opinion only–– there is nothing wrong with a nice Colt or Springer as a starter as well...

Do you currently own and shoot firearms? Pistols? If both answers are no, a 1911 might not be your best FIRST firearm purchase. Determine the why and what of handgun ownership -target, personal defense and concealed carry or not.

If none of that matters, might consider doing  a quick budget for the firearm, ammunition, cleaning materials, case/ security[lock or safe] and possibly training [ paid or unpaid] while locating a place to safely shoot.

I own Colt, Kimber and a new MetroArms. I am old and cheap and will never own a really high dollar firearm..ain't in my DNA...they are bullet launching platforms - period.

Talk to friends who have and shoot their guns..or visit a club and make some new friends but ignore the guy that tells you a .500 S & W is the ONLY handgun top have.

Have fun and be safe.
