Does anyone have experience with the Range Officer?  I'm looking into them and wanted to hear some first hand reports.  Are they worth it over the normal 'GI' from springfield?  I like the looks of them and can't stand the normal GI sights...

Thanks

I say any day of the week and twice on Sunday, they are worth it over a plane jane GI.

Your use should pick what you need.

Are you set on the parkerized GI-ish? The Ruger SR1911(stainless)  is arguably more gun for the money. (And based on my handling both at NRA this year, the Ruger *IS* more gun for the money.)

The RO is pushed by SA as an "entry level" competition 1911, with the accuracy capability of it's top-of-the-line TRP/TM line, less some of the accessories like a magwell,  ambi safety, and grip checkering. Mine was flawless cosmetically and like everything else I own, a better shooter than I am. I paid $800 locally.  The same store also sells the Ruger at $800.  At the same price, the RO is a better value.  If the Ruger were $200 less, the choice would depend on the intended usage––as a plinker, the Ruger would get the nod.  For an entry level competiton gun, the RO.

I prefer the looks of the RO to the looks of the stainless Ruger.  I was originally going after the Ruger (love my other Ruger pistols) but the RO caught my eye because it does look like a basic GI.  CLASSIC!

I haven't had a chance to handle a Ruger yet, i've heard great things....

Expecting a pretty decent bonus soon, thinking about applying it toward the pistol.  But I've also had my eye on a National Match M1a.....decisions, decisions.... :D

I went and handled the RO yesterday, solid piece.  Sights were something that didn't sit well with me, very hard to see.  That said I handled an OD green framed 4 inch 'Champion' and it fit like a glove.  Seemed whenever I came up with the pistol the front sights were nearly dead on and ready to go, the 5 inch I had to hunt for them for a second.  I'm sure I would train myself to get better with the 5 inch but i was very happy with the feel of the 4 inch.

Does anyone know what the 'Champion' 4 inch is officially called?  I did a google search and keep coming back with 'Loaded Champion' and such but can't seem to find a good review on the specific pistol i was handling.

OD Green reciever, Black slide, black rubbery grip, ambidextrius safety, night sights, 4 inch heavy barrel...

95% sure this is the pistol, any experience?  I think they were asking 899.99, seemed like a decent price considering the night sights.

The Champion comes in "G.I.", "Loaded", and "Operator"... And, is named accordingly.
I have a G.I. Champion in my stable, but I am planning to build it into basically "Operator" configuration.

As far as the Range Officer... An alternative, (if you want Novak sights, instead of target sights) is the full sized "Loaded".  I recently picked one up, and absolutely LOVE it.

Right now, the Springfields I have are: "G.I"... "G.I. Champion"... and, now a "Loaded".

EDIT

Here is a link... Scroll to the pistol you want to look at in the white box on the left (i.e. "Operator", "Loaded", etc)..... and when it cmes up on the right, there is a black box that says "Pick your model" (i.e. "full size", Champion", etc)
