Hello,
I have a Series 70 Colt that I have bought recently and I am currently tuning it to get it run 100%, or close too. I have been having ejection problems, but these are more or less solved by increasing extractor tension. Now the only real problem I have left is that it’s marking the brass. The mark it leaves is a little weird, at the mouth of the case is a little bend, so instead of a full circular a little bit of it is straightened. Also just below the mouth of the case there is a series of small scratches. It’s worst on factory ammo, but does appear with my own reloads too. I will try to get a picture uploaded. I know it’s not a serious problem, but I would still like to get to the bottom of it. |

A "D" shaped case mouth is normal for a 1911 with the small ejection port. The original Series 70s had the small port–– don't know if th "new" Series 70s do or not. I'm told the extractor tuning can get rid of, or reduce the case deformation, but haven't bothered on my single S70.
The deformed case mouth can be reloaded––the sizing process removes the dent. |

Thank you very much, just part of my 1911 learning. It's an original Series 70, I’ll be mostly shooting reloads, and the deformed cases aren’t too bad on my reloads so I’ll just live with it. |

I was just getting ready to say the same thing...the 70 series in my avatar is a 1978 Colt. It is dead bone stock except for grips and exhibits the exact same symptoms you describe...the solution is a lowered and flared ejection port...I juts cant bring myself to do it.. |
