I recently scored a set of brand new "Wicked Grips" grip set for one of my 1911's. They are the "slim" version, and would typically need a set of of slim bushings & grip screws. However, rather than swap the bushings and screws out, I thought there was a spacer of some sort (aka a flat piece which looks like a grip) that actually fits under slim grips so they can fit with the original grip bushings????....Anyone know what I'm talking about? Any hel would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!
Why order slim grips and then space them, I filed min down and then it fits perfect, thats what someone from alumagrips said to do if you cheap out... I did! also filed down the screw faces to flat as well, when you (if you) file the inserts, make sure you hacksaw/dremmel the slots (screw driver cut that removes and installs them) further down, so when you file them they can be removed still. took me about 10 minutes to do all 4 and they work great
Think about it - like they say, a spacer defeats the purpose of the thin grips by shimming out the grip to the same total thickness of the original grip. I see nothing wrong with reducing the height of the bushings by filing/grinding to fit the thin grips. The only problem comes if you want to go back to standard thickness - then you have to replace the bushings. If you do this, first put the thin grips on the old bushings to get an idea of how much to take off. Then do one side at a time, taking equal small amounts off each bushing and trying the grip before taking off more - and try to keep the cut 'square'.
