So I am watching a Gunbroker auction for a 70 series Colt Commander in 9mm. Serial number is  S/N BS84XXX. Pistol looks to be in excellent condition with two original mags and box. The bidding is at $760 right now with a few days left to go. At what point would I be paying too much?

Also any thoughts or experience with these? Reliable, Accurate, run away from? The current plan will include sending it to Novak for sights that do not suck and possible CCW use.

This is my Colt 9mm, made in 1952. It has an aluminum frame and shoots like a dream.
I still have the original brown plastic "Coltwood " grips. It is the pride of my small collection and it would be the last gun I sold. I don't know what I would ask for it but I would not sell it cheap.

Nice and pretty close to what I'm after. Lately the idea of a 9mm Commander has been appealing to me.

It will probably not go cheap unless you get really lucky!

I recently picked up a Government and a Commander size in 9mm from Sarco. Many of the 9s floating around right now are re-imports from Israel and were done by both Sarco and Century. The Century import marks are much more obtrusive and deeper on the frame just in front of the slide stop while the Sarco ones are shallower and on the bottom of the dust cover.

If it's not a re-import expect it to go for a premium and even the re-imports are pricey! I got lucky and picked up my series 70 Government in very good shape for $400 +tax and transfer but the commander cost me $650 +T/T in very good shape. Sarco is out of these at the moment but you may check back in with them as they get them back in every once in a while.

I wish I would have bought all the governments they had at the time as they realized their mistake and jacked them to $650 and still sold out of them.

If you are going to customize it I would probably pick up one of the re-imports so you don't hurt the value much by messing with it.

Mine both function well and no complaints with them at all. Here's some crappy pics

With the box, it may go over what I'd feel to be a reasonable price for it.

If it stops at $800, I'd be surprised, and I personally would be hard-pressed to give that much for one.

A 9mm Commander was my first auto.  It has always been reliable for me, but accuracy has never been its strong point.
