I have been and always will be a huge fan of the 1911 especially my 1957 Colt and 1975 Colt, both in 45acp. My only concession to another caliber has been my Colt 22LR conversion kit. (great when you have 5 kids learning to shoot) Along comes my LEO son with his combat tuperware (G-35 in 40SW) and I begin to wonder. Is anyone making a "complete" 1911 (not a conversion/after market parts) in 40SW?

Fusion, STI, Nighthawk, are a few that come to mind.

Springfield Armory also makes them from time to time

Kimber had some .40 models at one point.  I doubt they're currently in production, but it shouldn't be hard to find one on the used market.

Plenty of .40's out there but if you want something "different" than .45 I would go for a 10mm. The .40 cal is a downloaded 10mm (more or less) and yet another compromise caliber. The 10mm is a sweet round. Hell, Ted Nuggent hunts hogs with a Glock in 10mm. I think Dan Wesson is still offering a 1911 in 10mm for a decent price. Of course both Wilson and Nighthawk offer pistols chambered for 10mm. Kimber did at one time, not sure if they still do.

9x23 is another interesting option but you are looking at custom work to get into one of these. .38 Super (Super .38 in Colt speek) is an interesting choice as well.

Colt used to have a 40SW Defender.

I've shot an STI in .40 and it was sweet with just a little less recoil than .45ACP. It made for an accurate pistol.
