I recently got an used kimber sis pro (4 inch barrel) and took it to the range today. After 100 rounds of FMJ I decided to star running hollow points.  The would feed them, but the slide started to locking back all the time.  I changed the magazines and it continue to happen. It feeds, shoots the first round and slide locks back without even touching the next round in the magazine. In started shooting fmjs again and no problem with none of the magazines. Went back to the hollow points (gold dots 230 grains) and the problem starts again. The gold dots have a stronger powder charge than the pmcs FMJ ammo I was using. Could it be a weak recoil spring?  Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks.

The slide gets locked back by something (usually the magazine follower obviously) engaging the slide lock lever, so I wouldn't say it's the recoil spring, that doesn't have anything to do with slide-lock unless the slide is NOT locking back then you could say too strong of a recoil spring. (More educated folks please correct me if I'm wrong).

If you had a weak recoil spring it would probably have FTF's, slamming the slide into the next round and then stopping short of chambering the round, but if you say it isn't even touching the next round it's gotta be something actuating the slide lock lever (You didn't really mention in OP if the slide lock lever is raising or not when this happens...).

If there are rounds in the mag I can't think for the life of me what would be engaging the slide lock lever....sooooo this is about where my level of knowledge here stops...lol

But just from what I've read, I don't think weak recoil spring first...

There isn't any difference in the width of the bullets near the slide stop is there? Is it possible that a round could be pushing the slide stop up and locking back the slide? The slide stop is factory right?

You totally got it. The gold dots are touching the slide stop, while ball ammo is not. I think I may need to file the slide stop a bit or choose another brand of hollow point

Or get a different slide stop.  Kimber is not known for having good slide stops.

I would file or change the slide stop

If you choose to file it, do so at VERY small increments until you no longer have the issue, do it too much and you could go from the slide always locking back to it never locking back lol

Gold dots are known to be GTG so I wouldn't change that, unless you feel absolutely compelled to do so.

Kimber has had slide stop problems for awhile now.  It's the nose of the Gold Dot bumping the slide stop as it's loading and activating it.

If you haven't cleaned it yet, take a look at the slide stop and you should see copper marks on it.  That's the final clue.  Just take a small file, or some sand paper and work it back a little at a time.  Try to keep the profile the same.

Also, make sure that the slide stop is engaging when you have the stoppage.  A nose dive gives you similiar results unless you actually see that the slide stop has engaged.

Thanks everybody! The problem is indeed the slide stop. I have ordered a pair of slide stops from midway and will see what happens. I took the gun to the range again today, and found out it works with hornady critical defense 185 grains. Shot some 40 rounds out of it with no problem. Any other hollow i tried touches the slide stop and locks the slide back.

I have the same gun.  I have had good luck with hydro shocks and looking to try Winchester rangers.  This gun has always done very well,  so don't let this get you down.

A lot of guys here don't like Hornady Critical Defense ammo. It is considered inadequate for penetration. Install your new slide stop when you get them and use another brand of quality ammo. Gold Dots are a top choice in 230 grain loadings. Did you call Kimber about the problem?

You are correct. It's an easy fix (grind down the slide stop where it rubs), or just buying a new slide stop. I also dimple all my 1911 slide stops. Good luck.
