Here's my situation.
I own a Springfield Armory Loaded model with a factory magazine well on it. I then purchased a Kimber 22 conversion kit for it. Not thinking about it at the time of purchasing, the 22 magazine doesn't fit all the way in because of the magazine well. So I figure if it's not too much of a pain in the ass, I could remove the magwell when I want to shoot 22. There is nothing in the owners manual about this though. So if I attempt this, will the gun still function normally? I don't want to start messing with it and screw something up. Should I leave it alone and chalk it up to "now I have to go buy another 1911 without a magwell".
Any advice is greatly appreciated. |
| I can't tell from the stock photo on the SA website. How does the magwell attach? If it is a two-piece affair, like the Wilson Combat, you should be fine. The 'guide' part of the magwell can be sepearated from the mainspring housing, and you will just have two little (sorta delicate) ears exposed on the bottom of the mainspring housing. If its a one-piece unit, like a Smith and Alexander, then you will have to pick up a replacement mainspring housing (pretty cheap) and swap them out when you change calibers (not a big deal). |

On the bottom there is a flat circular screw head looking thing that looks like a small allen wrench would fit into. I'm going to carefully unscrew that and see what happens. I don't who makes the magwells for Springfield so I'm pretty much in the dark. |

Isn't the Kimber conversion kit magazine polymer? Rather than modifying your pistol, or buying a new one, why don't you just file the Kimber magazine slightly until it fits into your mag well? It shouldn't affect the function of the magazine at all.
Unless you're really just looking for a justifiable excuse to buy another 1911. ~Augee |

Yes the 22 mag is polymer. I'm gonna see if I can file it down. Are there company's that make just 22 caliber magazines for 1911's that I could buy? Or I'm just stuck with the ones that come with the kit? |
