Guys- Just got my first 1911 (SA Loaded SS) which shoots great.  I have about 200 rds thru it with no issues.  BUT the slide is very stiff and I have to use an overhand grip with my left hand to rack the slide when the hammer isn't cocked.  Trying to rack the slide with just my left thumb and index finger doesn't work since the slide is so stiff.  My only experience is with polymer semi's,which the slides are not stiff and rack easily.  Is this normal for 1911's?

shorter the barrel the stiffer the slide will be.

Oil the rails and in time it will get easier to use.

replace the recoil spring every 3000 to 5000.

This is a new pistol right? Had the same problem years ago with a NIB Colt GM.

Try stripping the pistol down and put the bare slide on the receiver by itself.

Gently move the slide back and forth and see if it sticks anywhere along its travel.

If it is very tight or only sticks in a certain spot you might want to have it "lapped" to fit the frame.

Try the 1911 section of the Handgun forum and I'm sure someone will chime in to help.

Nice choice of pistol by the way!

That 28 pound mainspring isn't helping matters.   When you decide to ditch the ILS guts in the mainspring, you can knock about 10 pounds off the mainspring by replacing it with a 19#.
