I have been talking to a Gunsmith who a cousin highly recommends near bye. I told him I wanted to upgrade my SA GI sights and he suggested that I get a " Millett Combat rear sight " and a "Millett Front sight .200 with a dbl crimp to replace my staked front sight. I did a search and cant find anything like that.. LOL The gun which shot real well the other day for the first time since I bought last month( busy with work) but the GI sights are tough on my eyes and this will be my home defense gun. He wanted the "combat sight " as it sits back some giving a longer sight picture which makes sense to em and the .200 which he can cut down if it shoots low. any help guys? I checked SA's sight which didnt help me at all, I did look at 10- 8's sight but to be honest I am lost..
any help? |

Springfield will install the Mi-Spec sights, front and rear, for about $60 if you send them your slide. I'd suggest you consider a gold bead front sight (gold bead installed on a staked post) so there's no need to modify the slide. A 10-8 NM rear sight would finish it off. That package would cost about $125 installed and no slide mods would be required.
Beyond that, you'd be looking at slide mods (dovetailing fore and aft) and various options on Novak-type sights with cost running upwards of $300 plus refinishing the slide. SA's website has a price sheet for sight mods which would give you a better idea. If your're going beyond a simple replacement of the existing sights which don't require a slide mod, you're probably better off trading up to a Loaded or a comperable competitor's model. |

For God's sake do not consider a Millett dual crimp front. You will be stuck with that unless you get the slide welded and a dovetail re-cut. Thankfully, Millett is out of the sight business for the moment.
I strongly suggest sending the slide to Novak's shop. They will cut the slide for front and rear sights, install them, and ship it back for a reasonable cost. |

I wouldn't use that gunsmith if he was advocating Millet sighting options. A Bo-Mar style adjustable rear sight would be better (and can get you night sights), or a Novak style cut would allow you oodles of rear sight options. Get your front sight dovetailed in there; stake and tenon jobs can be a PITA later. Millet used to be a decent option, but there's much, much better stuff on the market these days, and it sounds like your "recommended" gunsmith is a wee bit behind the times in how things oughta be done. |
| I think this is where I am at choice wise , sending it back to SA and having the 3 dot mil specs put on ( in my budget) or Keep the front for now and add a 10 - 8 Mil spec sight and have it installed. i contacted Novak and they quoted me $261 for their Night sights installed which is out of my budget right now.. |

Note––if you install a 10-8 rear sight, you're gonna have to do something with the front sight as well, as the height will not be compatible with the GI front sight. A simple staked post is probably about $10, plus install. I think I paid about $30 for the 10-8 NM rear sight. |

Consider having their plain white 3 dot sights installed. The tritium is a big part of that cost, and you will have the dovetails already done if you ever want to upgrade to tritium sights later. |

Sorry to be a pest, but the 10-8 website states that the NM rear sight is compatible with the g.i. dovetail in the slide, but Is compatible in height with the front sight on current production Colts which is taller than the front sight on the SA G.I.model, which is based on the old production Colts and maybe one of the recent replicas. The 10-8 NM I bought recently was compatible with the .175" front sight, not the nubby front sight of the earlier g.i. style colts. The SA Mil-Spec sights have a taller front and rear sights. Promise not to meddle again. Good luck! |
