I got my first 1911. Springfield MC Operator.  I have shot it, it shoots great blah blah.  My question is i bought the pistol used for a pretty good price, and I have been carrying it everyday.  I am wondering about the reliability of the piece. What do I need to look for on the gun itself that would indicate what kind of condition its in?

If it's shooting reliably, about the only thing I'd consider replacing is the recoil spring, since it has an unknown round count through it and Springfield's factory springs are pretty much crap.   Get a Wolff 16 or 17 pound recoil spring and call it good.

Might as well pick up an entire spring package, though the recoil spring is the only one worth replacing right off the bat. If you're not seeing light hammer strikes, and it's running well, hammer spring is probably good.

Condition of the rifling, how much wear is in front of the hood on top of the barrel is probably the best indicator for wear - not necessarily round count, but how hard it's been shot.

I agree with the recoil spring replacement, but I'd also get a MSH rebuild kit so you can remove the stupid ILS lawyer lock.
