So I am a die hard glocker.  I shoot glocks in IDPA and I carry a glock as my CCW.  I have nothing but great experiences with them.  That being said, I have been wanting to add a 1911 to my stable.  The main thing keeping me out of a 1911 was pricing.  I am in college (graduating in may WOOOOOOOT) and can't afford ANY 1911.  Well my local fun store put the Taurus PT1911 .45 on sale for 449.  Now at a price that even I could afford I decided I'd put one on lay a way today.  Granted I know there are several of you that are hardcore 1911 fans and will tell me how I bought a inferior firearm, but for the occasional plinking that is all this gun is going to be for me.  MAYBE I'll shoot it in some local matches, but its not going to see much more action than that.

What is a good introduction internet reading material for me?  I'd love to read up on the gun and its design.

Pic of what I bought.

thats not too bad of a price for a taurus...eventhough I highly discourage ALL taurus, the PT1911 i once owned was not bad at all and pretty reliable and nothing broke yet before i sold it Ihad just under 2K rnds though it....

personally, i'd put a springer or a colt up

Thats not a terrible price.  Just don't let any issues you experience with the Taurus sour you to future 1911 ventures.

Check out www.m1911.org for a plethora of great 1911 facts, history, and information.  The forums over there are also a pretty good resource for any questions you may have about the 1911 in general or your Taurus specifically.

Buy good magazines, learn how to tune the extractor (and possibly replace it with a good Wilson Combat bulletproof one), shoot good ammo, and replace the factory springs with good Wolff ones and that will solve most the issues you would come across.  I'm not saying this will make your gun totally reliable, but it will reduce a lot of the little issues that pop up on cough* inferior cough* 1911s.

EDIT: By the way, we have good resources here too 1911 Resources

I picked up a Taurus PT1911 a while back and I love it. It's a great shooter, and has been 100% reliable. I've ran right at 500rnds through it so far...everything from cheap WWB to my lead bullet reloads, and it ate everything without any issues.

Great gun for the money!!

I'd be interested in how many of the PT1911 badmouthers have actually owned one...or are just recycling what they read on the internet.....

Glad you stepped away from the 'Dark Side' for a little bit. Watch out , once you start shooting  you may get the '1911' version of BRD.

doubtful.  I don't care to hump a 2.5 lbs brink on my hip.  Sorry guys, I'm a small frame guy 5'4 130 and have no desire to tote a fullsize gun.

OP  your thread title would make a great title for a childrens book.

Nice looking pistol by the way.

If you got a decent one, you will get hooked on 1911's man. I've seen a few PT's that would run and run and run straight out of the box. Once you get the fever, it doesn't matter that you won't carry it, you'll just want all of them to have them . I carry an XD but I've never met a 1911 I didn't want to take home.
