Need a recommendation for a new fullsize 1911.
Range of no more than 1100 bucks.

My idea so far is to get a Colt XSE and hand it to a competent gun smith and have him do some magic on it.. replace the beavertail and add a s&a magwell etc.
The gun must have an ambi safety. It would be a primary self defense/carry gun.

This sound like a good idea? Any other suggestions? thanks 1911forum!

If the XSE has most of the features you want, go for it.   That's what I'd do, though depending on the smith's rates, I might start out with a S70 repro or a 1991 NRM.

Maybe a used Springfield TRP?  Might run a little under budget, even.

Mat- check out Coltsmfg.com,...the new 2011 catalog shows the XSE with the upswept beaver, my dealer came back from the Shot show and said he has some on order, I am looking at the #4012 in the 4-1/4, it looks perfect to me....IMO

Can't go wrong with a Rail Gun or Combat Elite. Rail Gun was bought last year and Combat Elite this year. Both came with up swept beavertails.

I have been very impressed with the fit, finish, and reliability of my Combat Elite, great shooter.

I'd have to go with the XSE/railgun over the combat elite, as they come with an ambi safety already in place, which is mandatory for me (lefty shooter)
