Whats the general consensus on the Para GI Expert, found an awesome deal on one but don't know that much about Para or their guns. Been lookin into gettin into a 1911 for a while now. Would this be a good starter gun and are there any major flaws with it?

Its solid I acquired a RIA shortly after the para and sold the para and kept the RIA. Plastic mainspring housing and trigger finish is weak. Ran good  and was accurate.

Buy a Springfield GI or Mil-Spec.

Gun runs OK, their customer service is "Interesting."  My son's slide release failed after about a month.  Took the gun to the gunsmith for verification.  Called Para from the store, them wanted the entire gun shipped to them instead of sending a new slide release.  Bought and installed a Wilson Combat release at the shop, no more problems.  Decently accurate, not to finicky about ammo, the finish scratches easily.  If it's a really good deal, go for it.

customer service was indeed interesting.  when i dealt with them, i felt that i knew their pistols better than they did .

I picked up a GI Expert back in November and have nothing but good things to say about mine. I've got about 750 rounds through it without a hitch. The only things I've done to it were polishing the feedramp and blacking out the dots on the rear sight. The finish on my gun has been holding up much better than expected, especially with all the negative reviews on the matter. Slide to frame fit is excellent. Fit and finish for a $500 pistol is pretty good with my example. Accuracy is dead nuts POA, this will be limited only by the shooter. Just my .02.

I fondled one at a local gunshow.  The magazine release button was gritty.  Nice feel overall though.  I have a plain jane RIA at the moment.  Would kind of like to add another 1911 soon, just not sure which.

I got one recently,  and put 250 rounds through it.  no malfunctions ate everything I put in it, Gold dots, Win xst's, Fiotchi, WWB, Blazer brass.   The Grips are sinful A must do upgrade to at lest some hogue's.

Mine ran great, accurate and no malfunctions. My son liked it so much I gave it to him for Christmas and guess what? Its still running great with zero malfunctions. The finish is a bit weak and wears easily but for a budget 1911 the one we got has been great so far. Only thing I did do was get rid of the butt ugly grip panels and replaced them with a pair of black rubber Kimbers I had as spares.

See what happens after another 2,000+ rounds, especially if the slide is stainless. Odds are fair the wilson SS will batter that soft, shitty slide to the point that the slide fails to lock more often than not.
