I have an opportunity to buy a pre owned but only fired 8 rounds SW1911PD Scandium/Crimson Trace pistol at a good price $850.  I would like to get opinions on this pistol.

I have always liked S&W guns but have never dove in to their 1911s simply because of the external extractor.  S&W boasts that it is an upgrade that improves reliability, and I know that Sig uses them on their 1911 line as well.  The gun itself seems great with the laser grips and Melonite finish plus the Scandium alloy frame seems like it would be better than the aluminum lightweight frames.

Any one have opinions good or bad on the SW1911 line, or more specifically this particular model?  Function, accuracy, reliability, etc

First, I am a Smith & Wesson Fan.  But I own one of their 327PD Scandium revolvers in .357 magnum and it's too light tocomfortably  handle the cartridge's recoil.  On this 1911, you might find its Scandium frame takes out too much frame weight to make the recoil of a .45 ACP cartridge acceptable.

I've shot hundreds of rounds through the Scandium framed 1911's and you will have no trouble with recoil.  It's just like any other .45 pistol with a plastic or aluminum frame.

They are very reliable and are priced well for their features.  I say go for it!

I have the PD and the Sc 1911's the only problems I had was with the plunger tube in the Sc.  No other problems with either gun.

I have a PD and like it very much.  I also have Springfiled Gunsite Govt and a Springfield TRP.  When I carry a 1911, I carry the PD because it's lighter and a 4" barrel vs the 5" of either of the Govt's.  I've only put about 500-600 rounds thru it, but no problems.

I had one as my first 1911.  It was the Gunsite model.  It was a good carry piece, but tough for me to manage with one hand.

I have one, and have mixed emotions..  The recoil is more than a steel framed gun and quite a handful one handed.  Not like it's going to jump out of your hand but it does roll pretty good..

Never had a failure to eject however about 5% of the empties wind up hitting me in the face, some quite hard .

A few failures to feed with different handloads - never with factories..

The timing of the grip safety / firing pin safety didn't feel correct to me....

BUT, I really do like the pistol !!  Once I get the few bugs worked out and a set of night sights installed I'll be happy with it.

I have 2000 rounds through mine.  The only problem came from CHEAP MAGs.   I bought four cheapy mags and had fail to feed problems. Got rid the the cheapy mags and it will eat anything I feed it with out a problem.  The gun fits my hand perfectly and have no problems one handed.

I have a Scandium Commander, not the early billboard style, but pre-PD model.

I have over 2000 rounds through it now without a single malfunction.  The only mags I've used are ACT and mostly Wilson.  Most of that ammo has been cast bullet reloads.  My own cast bullets from a 225gr Lyman RN mould, wheelweight alloy, and whatever powder I get cheap at the time.  The charge is always loaded to pretty much duplicate ball ammo to ensure reliability in any auto I shoot them in, including my AR45.

Recoil is completely managable.  I'm not trying to be a tough guy at all.  I don't get much out of shooting .44 mags, or even .357's in smaller revolvers and usually load Specials instead.  But, I've used my Scandium Commander in a steel plate match, and won.  I was on vacation at the time, and didn't have any reloads with me, only the 1000 rounds of WWB ball I brought along, so I used some of that.

It really all depends on you, in terms of recoil.  I highly recommend trying one out before deciding to spend the money on one.  It's either your thing or not.

In terms of the external extractor, don't worry about it with the S&W.  A nationally known gunsmith friend of mine hates external extractors on 1911's, since most of them don't work.  But, he can't speak highly enough of the S&W external extractor.  They made it right.
