so I decided to keep my sig 229  and not worry about night sights on my Colt commander and to just plan on buying one of these little guys after the first of the year the ARFCOM way! Kimber Ultra Carry w/ night sights or the Colt Defender w/ night sights then will eventually put CT grips on.....of course due to my lower back injury from rodeo it will ride in a Galco jackass rig.  now the kimber is perfect in my hand natural point sight come up perfect every time but never handled a colt just wanted some opinions on what one you all would pick and why

I'd say that the majority of the nightmares I've heard about Kimber has something to do with pistols with barrels less than 4"

The Defender is one of the only tiny 1911 I've heard anyone say they trust much, so my vote goes to the Colt.

The horror of the little gun. I carry a Kimber Ultra Carry II and all I can say is, you better practice a lot. I always shot it fine at the range, then I took a class with it and had a hard time hitting the broad side of a barn. It took lots and lots of draw and shoot practice to get proficient. I love it now though.

Just purchased a COlt Defender and I am heading to the range today with ehr and a Series 70 as well; I have never fired any 1911s smaller than 5", so we'll see.

I've had this for about 8 years now, it's reliable, accuracy is good.

The short one's take a bit of practice, but so does any new platform.

The only downside on the smaller ones is that they are a bit harder on the recoil spring so, you will be renewing them more so than a govt. size

Defender is the only way to go.

They really have the reliability down on them.

IMHO is a wash.  The Kimber has a Swartz safety while the Defender has a series 80.  Either is easily enough bypassed/disabled if you want.  Both come stock with nasty rubber grips that you will want to change out right away.

Kimber is available blued if you prefer a darker gun, as far as I know the Defender is only available in SS.

The only problems I've ever had with my Ultra was with one batch of LSWC ammo.  Said ammo was oversize and would not fit in a case gage so probably unfair to blame the Kimber for not feeding it reliably.  Colt chambers tend to be cut a bit more sloppy.  If you can find one, the Kimber Compact (4" slide on the ultra frame) or Colt CCO 4.25" slide on the Officer frame is a nice package.  You don't really give up any concealability and only add an oz or two of weight.  (they do seem hard to find though)

My Ultra, which is my normal carry piece:

My defender has been great. I have no experience with the Kimber but I'd buy my colt again.

I have owned an Ultra in 40 and now have one in 45, both have been very relibable. Just lucky I guess. IMO both should be solid pistols.

i say neither (modding your commander or a second commander is the answer), but defender of those two if it has to be one of them.

the kimber shoots way better by design colt has a better track record for.reliability.

I bought a new Colt Officer's model in about 1992.  At the time I was shooting several hundred rounds a week through 5" 1911's, and I found the Colt to be a joy to shoot.  In fact it is the gun I regret selling more than any other.

I also have heard the most complaints about Kimbers with the Ultra models, but in fairness I think the only thing I don't care for on them is that they only offer one Ultra model that is not aluminum framed.  I prefer steel frames on my 1911's.

I've got a Defender Plus that I got this summer and has jumped to the top of my carry list- light ,accurate and easy to conceal-even with the full size grip.

I've never had an issue with my Kimber Ultra Carry II or the Ultra Covert.  I did however have to put about 400 rounds through both of them before they reliably fed HP rounds

I have a Defender and a New Agent also.  They both have been faultless from day one.

I vote Colt.

well just tried the jackass rig, not for me ugh, i would have to wear my carhart coat over the damn thing.  i think i settled on Colt though, even if I can't carry it, it would be nice to have another in the safe.  I may try OWB with suspenders ( I am 31 and feel like 80, I should be on the front porch in a rocking chair) damn the rodeo....thanks for the input from everyone

I have around 600rds through my Kimber Ultra Raptor II.
I have never had a problem with it. For its size it shoots very well.

Defender all the way. No one beats their reliability when it comes to 3" weapons.

And if there is a question about accuracy, this was done on the 2nd day owing it.

I carry a kimber Ultra carry carry II and have over 700 rounds in it and not 1 issue ever, no matter if its ball ammo, PD rounds, or whatever i give her. Just keeps going and i love it. Hold them both, see which one you like better and buy it. its all personal preference. accuracy is also outstanding.

Thanks Pete, I must have another log in but seem to have forgotten it. I guess I did that before hence this log in...must be getting old...LoL. The Raptor is a beautiful weapon, was going to be my next choice after my last Kimber but it did not work out. I had an Ultra Covert that went back 3 times to Kimber, finally swapped it out with my dealer for a Pro Covert. Both had issues and I was not confident in them as a carry weapon. I did have other people fire them to be sure it was not me. Its a shame as I loved the fit and finish as well as the feel in hand but it was not meant to be. I hear Kimber tried to play with extractor design at the time, had numerous problems and has since gone back to their original. I am not sure if that is true but I hope so. I would sure like to try out something newer from them its just hard to "experiment" with that kind of money.

I just bought a Colt Night Defender and I couldn't be more happy.  The Night Defender has the darker slide, so that's why I got it for CCW.  I don't really care for the shiny guns in this regard.  If you are looking for something similar, check out the Springfield Armory EMP.  I have heard good things on them as well.
