hey guys,

I've been eyeballing one of the blackened rail guns and am wondering how colts are out of the box??  What are their triggers like?  Do they require any parts replacements? Do they have plastic MSHs?

I really like these pistols and am wanting to buy one, so any advice or comments are most welcome.

I have one of the unblackened SS rail guns and I really like it.  I did have to send mine back to Colt because it was stove piping every 14 rds or so.  It came back fine, and now 100%.  I haven't replaced any parts.  Yes they have a plastic MSH.  I'm happy that I bought one....it's a nice shooter.

Depending on the price different between the SS and the blackened SS, it might make more sense to buy the SS and send it off for melonite or IONBond.  Colt still makes good stuff, they by no means have the best trigger or the best barrel or the best fitting or anything like that, but when you put everything into consideration they probably make the best overall pistol.  If the nylon MSH bothers you, you can buy a SS version off Midway or Brownells for around $30.

The XSE (Rail gun without the rail basically) line has had very servicable triggers, in my experience.

I can't think of one I've played with that had more than a 5-6lb pull.

My gf got a new blued XSE without a rail. The slide fit is great, the trigger is a little gritty, though. The rear Novak-style sight screw was not tightened down, so the sight slid side to side during shooting. We haven't had any malfunctions yet. Overall, it doesn't seem to be up to par with the $900 price tag. It's more like a Springfield Loaded level of quality IMO.

I'm at about 3000 rounds with this one now with zero malfunctions from first shot to last. I'd have more through it but I rotate my 1911s around for range trips.

I changed the plastic MSH with a S&A, appropriate grips, took out the 80 series safety and replcaced the ambi safety with a Caspian model that uses a modified hammer pin which is IMO the best Ambi safety to date. All was personal preference except for the ambi safety. It seems most factory or aftermarket ambi safeties have little tangs, half shaft pieces, fall out (which the stock colt one did when I removed the grip panels) or just break. The Caspian will surely not come out, break or give in any way and will function fine even if the right side is completely removed.

None of those items NEED to be changed and is more personal preference than anything for the XSE guns to be reliable.
