I recently got a Colt Delta Elite (10mm), and I was looking at it compared to my friends 45ACP 1911.
The dimensions are identical on the exterior, and the magazines are interchangeable. Can the slides be safely swapped and shot? If so, I might have to pick up a 45 barrel/slide/mag combo. Thanks, |

Thanks, Without having both in front of me, I would go by memory and say the two are not dimensionally identical. The mags are NOT interchangeable.

| I am sure someone will come with a more definitive answer but I will give you my free opinion. It is a 1911. Could you get a barrel and slide and shoot...probably depending on the frame/slide fit of what you buy. I would think (although I don't know and don't claim to know) that the feed ramp would be a little different for a 10MM than a 45 but perhaps that could be fixed with the barrel. I think most will tell you that without fitting it will do more harm than good on your frame and even with fitting it wouldn't be worth it. When questions like this come up the general answer is buy another gun or shoot the gun you have. |

You will need new:
- Slide - Breechface is fit to case head - Barrel - Duh... - Extractor - Narrower case of the 10 = claw is tensioned in more - Ejector - Narrower case of the 10 = ejector has to be closer to bore axis - Slide stop - Protrudes further towards centerline of frame - no need to clear larger round - Magazines - Feed lips are different, plus there are guide rails for the rounds stamped into the body I have compared the 10 and .45 side by side, and the above is what are dimensionally different between the two. |

In a sense yes, but not really.
ejector may be different. Magazines are different. Add in sights, magazines, barel, slide, extractor, ejector, recoil spring, firing pin, firing pin plate, firing pin spring, barel bushing, and gun smith fees you looking at another gun or close in costs. That is to do the job right. eta. Feed ramps in the frame may bedifferent as well. May not cause a problem, but the best way around this is to purcase 2 ramped barels on in 10mm the other in 45 and have the frame machined to accept the ramp style you or your gs picks out. |

LOL, LOL, LOL. This all reminds me of the last time I went shooting three or four weeks ago. I grabed my RIA .45 and some new magazines that I wanted to prove would function well in it and quickly loaded up some rounds then started shooting. The first mag went well and I loaded the second a fired three shots and then saw a cartridge fall out on the ground, puzzled, I racked the slide and saw another cartridge fall out of the barrel and onto the ground. Upon inspection I discovered that somehow I had gotten some 10mm mixed in with my .45 ammo in my pocket, well my cast reloads do look a lot alike.
Now to your questions. The 10mm mags will funtion well in a .45 if your shooting 10mm. I have a 10mm Carbine that uses a Delta Elite lower or a .45 lower, either one will work just fine as long as you load 10mm cartridges into 10mm mags. On the other hand .45 mags will not function (reliably) in the 10mm with 10mm ammo. Now if you buy a Delta Elite 10mm and put a .45 slide (if it fits), barrel, ect. ect. on it and use 10mm mags you chances are fair to good that it will function as mine did. Now I already have both guns, mags and carbine and plenty of ammo and I'm fortunate in that they will all interchange but to tell you the truth I think you would be better served by buying both instead of just a slide, barrel, ect. ect. I got my RIA new for $400, it's just great and I enjoy shooting both. 10mm, when you care enough to send the very best. |

Split and bulged the case. Oops. |
