I have a chance to buy a nice, old Colt MilSpec model. It has a Bomar rear sight. Can a 1911 be un-Bomar'd once its done, or am I stuck with it?
The actual dovetail that holds the sight on is completely covered.

It looks like a very old version of something like this (below) except it actually says Bo-Mar and is squared at the front end.

Why would you want to "un-Bomar" it?

I prefer other types of sites.

You only have one fixed sight option if it is a bomar cut in the slide.  thats is if you do not want to fill and re machine.

You are probably money ahead to swap pistols to get the sights you want, as opposed to trying to modify this one.   If you don;t mind my asking, what type of "aiming stuff" do you prefer, and why?

I don't really have a need for a target sight. I have always used lower profile sights designed for defensive use. No hard edges to snag etc. My Baer TRS has trijicon, Springfield has Novak.

Also, you could consider rounding the hard corners of the existing sight.

Give me the details, I might want to pick up that gun.  :)
