Thanks for the info, think I'll pass on it. Same place has a Ruger P944 I can get for under $300 or a Sig P229 DAO I can get for $450.

Out of the three, I'd get the Ruger.  DAO Sigs are blegh.

Is that ALL of your choices though?  Thats like going to the pet shop and having to decide between a dumb dog, a dog with three legs, or a dead cat.

$450 is getting close to M&P and Glock price territory.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but is not the S&W99 the exact same gun as the Walther P99?  Other than the magazine floorplate issue, I thought those were ok.

The SW99 rendition of the popular Walther P99 is a joint collaboration between Smith & Wesson and Walther. The modified receiver used in the SW99 is supplied by Walther and is manufactured in Germany. Smith & Wesson manufactures the slide and barrel of the SW99 in the United States. Though there are slight variations in aesthetic design, the function of the SW99 is identical to its German-made counterpart.

––You are correct sir

I am a SW99 fan, but only in the original 9mm versions. The .40S&W versions just do not work as consistently as the 9mm. I have read this is due to Walther designing the P99 to exactly fit the 9mm cartridge, leaving little room for the increased size of the .40 cartridge, which has led to problems in a fair percentage of the .40 pistols. So basically, 9mm yes, .40 no.

I think the above is correct.  I have had a Walther P99 full size, a compact S&W and a Walther compact, all the same design, all in 9mm.  All of them including the S&W ran fine and were perfectly serviceable firearms.
