I've been shooting my father-in-law's S&W 9mm and it seems that I'm always hitting to the right and low from where I'm aiming.  What is causing this and how can I correct it?  I saw a diagram once that showed quadrants around a bullseye and what would cause you to hit in that area.  I'm not sure where I saw that.

My father-in-laws answer is to compensate by aiming left and high of the target.  I told him that I want to correct my form not compensate for my weakness.

Wait I found the diagram that I was looking for - just had to pull my head out of my ass

Feel free to respond anyway - I'd like to hear from you all.

Can you post the diagram or a link to it?

You need to dry fire and lots of it. Pay close attantion to keeping the front sight on target as you squeeze.

Shoot it from a rest/sandbag.  Where is the poi?  If it is consistant with your offhand shooting, then your sights need adjusting.   They don't always come zeroed and are likely to impact different points with different ammo.

He must have a fixed sighted model...or a twist of a screw would zero you in.
As it is, drifting the rear sight to the left would at least get the windage corrected and IMO, that's a bit more important than the elevation.
As simon says another weight projectile can change the point of impact for better or worse.
If your father in law has no problem hitting where he aims, you may be pulling it downward when firing...sneak a 9MM snap cap somewhere into the magazine, when it chambers and does not fire, you may notice it then.

Ditto on the snap cap idea... but dont load that mag yourself... make someone else load it for you.

The diagram was actually somewhere here in the handgun discussions forum, but I can't seem to locate it right now.

Thanks for all the opinions...I'll give your suggestions a try.  Yes, the sights are fixed on the gun I was shooting or I would have adjusted them.
