This probably belongs in reloading, but section gets more traffic.  Are there any contraindications to reloading for and HK USP 45?  I know that every gun manufacturer recommends no handloads, and most of us handloaders do it anyway.  And I know enough not to use hard cast lead in a polygonal bore, but is there anything else I should watch out for in handloading for this pistol?

My loads are always fairly light target loads, 185 grain montana gold JHP with 4.7 grains of 700X, but I admittedly don't separate my .45 brass by lots.  I just reload it until it cracks at the case mouth from the repeated bell-ing and crimping and toss the individually cracked cases or toss any "discolored" cases.  I'm going to be shooting a buddies USP regularly and want to use the same handloads I use in my 1911's.

Thanks

You should be fine. The USP is a very strong design and can take the .45 Super loads with no problem from what I have heard. Certainly it can take any normal .45 load and keep ticking.

Thanks Ikor.

My worry was that the chambers might be 'more unsupported' than the 1911 chambers.  After taking the barrels out and dropping a round in the chamber of the HK and one in my Colt it doesn't look any more unsupported than the 1911 barrel.

I should probably inspect my cases more than I do anyway.  I toss my 9mm and 223 brass after 4 reloads, but the .45 is such a low pressure round, and my loads are so light I go on the assumption that the case will split from work hardening before it weakens and splits from pressure.  I also inspect for metal defects.

Anyway, we just got back from unloading about 500 rounds through the gun.  VERY NICE!!!  Recoil is very light, it seemed to help my marginal skills with a handgun, and in the 250 rounds I personally put through it, not one landed outside the 0 circle or missed the head of a standard IDPA target at 15 yards.

There were two failure to feeds on 230 grain UMC JHPs.  The slide stopped about an eight of an inch out of battery, I was probably limp wristing it.  I also realized that I should probably go up a little in my powder charge for the HK.  About one in twenty of my reloads failed to move the slide back far enough and it either stove piped or didn't lock back on the empty mag.  (Guessing that's the issue)  Interestingly enough my Colt and my Kimber have both digested those reloads without a hiccup.  All in all there were about 20 FTF, FTE's.  We'll have to work on grip and I'll try a different load before we blame the gun though.  I love it when my friends get new toys for me to play with...
