What happened? Why is this round so hard to find?

IMO, it's due to the run on guns and ammo seen with the last election combined with increase in carry permits leading to people buying a lot of carry sized guns.  Ruger's LCP, the P3AT, the P238, etc. have been big sellers to these CCW noobs.  It's finally coming to an end.  I bought a few boxs locally lately and I just ordered a few hundred rounds online.

On the bright side, it's now a round that you can save a boat load on by reloading.

Thats my guess.  Here in hawaii we have no CCW so 380 ammo is pretty much available anywhere.

Question: Is there any online shops or sites there who sell on the web if they got lots of stock

Why not just order from one of our site supporters like AIM?

Local Wal-Mart has tons of WWB .380ACP ammo. Also has .32ACP, .357SIG and .45GAP ammo in stock.
Just no 9x19mm, .40S&W and .45ACP.

Ruger LCP

In 2008 alone they made 83,161  LCPs.

If everyone who bought an LCP bought one 50 round box of ammo thats over 4.1 million rounds of .380 right there.

Current estimates are Ruger is producing 15,000 of them a month and has sold over 360,000 of them thus far.

More states have CCW, 380 is popular.

I was going to order some of the PRVI .380 from AIM but I was too slow. However, Palmetto State Armory had it in stock as well. They still do according to their web site.

When I read the thread title I thought it was going to be, "Why .380 when you can have a 9mm with almost no sacrifice?"

Which is what I'm asking. I just do not get why anyone would want a .380 when you can get an ultracompact 9mm.

I can't find a $300, $400, or even $500 pocket 9mm that comes close to the size and weight of my LCP. If you have a suggestion on a pocket gun thats close to the size and weight of the LCP and doesn't cost $900, I'm all ears!!

The story I heard is that several of the US manufacturers didn't produce .380 in late 2008, due to a spike in demand for 9mm ammo after the 2008 election.

It's getting better.   I've bought Remington and Winchester .380 at local big-boxes within the last few months, after going for over a year without seeing any.   Foreign .380 (RWS, S&B, Privi) is easy to get by mail order at this point.

The Obama surge on the purchase of all things gun paired with the popularity of the LCP made a huge demand.

Its become a very popular round for people to carry. The pistols are small, compact and most of the time will fit in your front pocket. In some places.38 , .32 and even .25 have been hard  to come by. The market for pocket pistols has gone way up in the last few years.
I have a boat load of .380 though. The ammo was made in the late 1980s and early 1990s and sold as self defense ammo. At the time it was really pricey. $12.95 for 6 rounds. The ammo is super hot and CAN NOT be used in any pistols that are not rated for +P ammo. I will only shoot it out of all steel pistols. There was a group of us that bought out a dealer of all the calibers he had on hand. Got it for less than $10.00 per 50 rounds. The more we got the cheaper the ammo got.

Did not mean to get side tracked. I carry my .380 as a back up. Either a PPK or a 1934 Beretta.
