Hello all

I am pondering building a 1911. I have built my onw AR and now I wan't to do a handgun. So here are a few questions.....

Overall how difficult is it to build a 1911?

What tools will I need to do this?

Do they make good drop in parts for a 1911?

Are Essex Arms frames any good?

How much gunsmithing would the essex arms frame require?

How about Caspian arms frames, are they good?

How hard is it to fit the slide to the frame with a caspian?

How difficult is it to blend the grip safety for an Ed Brown style safety?

How diffiult is fitting the barrel?

Are good drop in barrels avaliable?

How difficult is installing the sights?

Is building from scratch worth it?

Is it bettter for a 1911 newcommer to build on a cheap gun first a.la RIA 1911?

What is a good resource for parts that require minor fitting for a 1911?

Thanks in advance for your help, let me know if there are any other things I might have missed.

I think you will find the 1911 a heck of a lot more difficult.  There is a great deal of knowledge spent in a well fit and running 1911.  It is not, in my opinion, a good "garage gunsmith weekend hobbiest newbie" project. Ideally you could find a good smith who wouldn't mind you sitting in on some builds and then tackle a used frame.   In my opinion it would be wasted time if you only planned to build one or two.  good luck

Hey Sparky,

I asked a similar question over on 1911forum.com and got some good answers.  Here's the thread:

Bottom line as noted above is it's a lot more involved than building an ar15 but assuming patience and care is taken it is not necessarily beyond the abilities of the average smart feller.

Shoot me an IM if you decide to go through with it because I'm thinking of building one and mebbe we could figure it out concurrently.

(Admittedly, you’ll have to wade though a bit of name-calling in the above thread!! )

Hey guys!  I'm in the same boat as y'all!  I'm just about done with my RIA Gov't... I got confirmation from Brownell's they shipped my King's 3 dot sights and the stake tool.

I'm looking at a frame and slide from Essex if they do private sales thru a local FFL.

Maybe a group buy or special serial number series??  Would any of you get your slide engraved custom??
