Ok...
I consider myself to be a pretty decent shot with a hand gun....especially since I started shooting weekly. I follow the Todd Jarret tips to the T and I am trying to get my father shooting decent. He has several hand guns and he shoots all of them left. I can pick up his gun and shoot POA every time. He is worst with his M&P SC 9mm, which sucks because he wants to make it his EDC. I was watching him shoot the other day and he appears to be doing everything correctly, but something is up. What would cause a shooter to shoot left? I assume maybe he is influencing his hand to much when he pulls the trigger? He doesn't pull them left and low...just left. He has sausage fingers as well...he really can't pull off the perfect pistol hold because of his hands. So that may also be a factor.... But generally what part of the process will cause someone to shoot to the left badly? |

Generally pushing the gun to the side with the trigger finger can do that...
Try having him shoot like this: wrap the right hand around the gun (assuming he's a righty) Wrap the left hand over the gun...now relax the right hand completly, so your left hand is the one gripping it (and squishing your right hand against the grip). The right hand should be basically completly limp at this point, and the left hand is the one guiding the gun as a whole. If he slowly concentrates on just moving his trigger finger only on his right hand, while the left hand is gripping everything, it should go off and hit POA. It'll take some concentration on it, and it may feel a little "weird" if his right hand isn't in "control", but small steps first. Practice, and it'll become second nature after a while. The hardest part will be not tensing up the right hand when moving the trigger finger, followed closely by not flinching due to the percieved "I'm not holding the gun tight enough" thing that usually happens. Don't worry, the gun will be plenty tightly held, and it'll always stay in control. YMMV |

If he's right handed and shooting left he could be:
- Placing the tip of his finger on the trigger, which would push the pistol left. Generally the base of the fingernail should be lined up with the trigger. - Wrapping his hand too far around the grip This depends very much on grip and hand size, but wrapping your hand too far will push the gun left. Too little, like fingertips on the front strap and you would pull right. There should be a little 'daylight', about a pencils width of NON-contact between his hand and the right side of the grip. Have him watch the front sight, dry fire, and see where the sight goes to make adjustments. All this is reversed if he is left handed. |

First thing to do before correcting any other shooting habits is to determine what his dominate eye is. Google the term and how to determine. This. If he is right handed and left eye dominate, he will shoot to the left. Have him close his left eye, and see if that will help. |

Also google "Shooting chart." It's a helpful pie chart that may assist in diagnosing what's going on.

Mix snap caps in with live rounds, and don't tell him. Watch and see what his hands do when he fires the dud. I take people shooting all the time and this is a great training tool. |
