Went to the funshow with my date for the 1st time in years. Nothing particularly new there, though I was pleased to see minimal toothless and zero hoodrats (although it was the first morning). I was surprised how she actually got into it there, picking up the difference between single action cowboy and double action modern revolvers. Even without the first clue about what's what, she proved she had good taste, transfixed on an original blued S70 in 9mm with staghorn grips and Smith K-frames. Helping her figure out what fit best, I settled on the elusive 3" K-frame as the 2" were going to jar a new shooter at the range and 4" was too heavy for her. So we strolled the various tables looking for one to no avail when we hit the last table on the way out. There nestled amidst 2 rows of 2" and 4" K-Frames was a Model 66-2 in that hard-to-find 3" configuration. The price was absurd, nothing new for a gun show ($800) so we were simply browsing. I asked him out of curiosity how firm the price was. He was willing to talk, and though I'd have simply moved on, wanting this gun much more than needing it, I recalled why I really sought this beast out.

I gave my father my Gen 3 Colt Detective Special a few years ago. He thought my 4" 586 was too heavy, but had trouble getting a sight picture with the little DS, and I imagine the small frame wasn't the most pleasant shoot for him. It was then that I made up my mind to find him a 3" K-frame (the perfect balance between the two) and slap on a pair of CTGs for him. We came to terms and it cost me less than $500, so I bit. I'll be teaching my date the fundamentals with this, a BHP, and a Colt Diamondback in .22. When the time comes it will go to the old man, and hopefully be more than what he'll need for the rest of his life.

Sweet gun.

Seems like the 3" K frames are at the top of everybody's list now, and priced accordingly.

But, look at it this way- while they don't K frames any more, you can still make money. So, which is more rare?

(I've obviously used every justification in the book by now)
