I was looking in the local candy store (gunshop) the other day... was wondering... is the Highpoint Carbine worth the 169 he was asking for it?  Looks like it would be a fun range plinker.

Any opinions?

Get a real rifle or subgun.  Waste of $$

Run, don't walk away from the highpoint...  Well...  If you're on a super tight budget, which based on the other threads your probably not that tight... it's OK.  I think the kel-tec version is actually a little nicer.  But...  You can get a lot of great rifles for not much more money.  If a semi-auto pistol caliber carbine is what you're looking for, you may wanna check out a Ruger Camp Carbine.

"Gun Tests" said the one that they bought for testing operated fine. S.O. G. is selling them for $139,
so I guess $169 retail is a resonable price.

Everyone I know who has one, loves it.  Me included.  I love shooting that thing.  For <$200 you can get the model with a stock pouch and 2 extra mags.  Well worth it.  I've never had any problems with it, and it's relatively accurate.  The Kel-Tec pistols are great, but the sub2000 feels cheap to me.  It feels like if I droped it it would shatter.  I'd say, for 169, go for it.  You won't be dissapointed.

Oh, and another thing.  Gun Tests compared it with the Ruger PC9 Carbine, and said that the HiPoint was a better value.  It's HiPoint, not HighPoint, too.

I have one and it is a great little plinker. Its cheap and fun to shoot. It runs wolf 9mm without a problem. Now for the negative things about it. 1. you cant field strip it for a good cleaning. ( yes I am anal about this) 2. You cant get high capacity mags (however replacement mags are cheap enough to stock up on) 3 the rubber/plastic buttstock vibrates the hell out of you face when you shoot it. Now if you can live with these 3 things BUY it you really wont be sorry, Not only that the last time I looked they have a life time warranty. I and several of my friends own these rifles and have never had a FTF or FTE from them as of yet.

If you want a cheap semi rifle buy a SKS the Highpoints (THE WORKING MANS GUN) are cheaply made and look and feel like it .you can also hunt with the sks and 7.62x39 is always priced right. HIGHPOINTS ARE LIKE FAT GIRLS ,they are fun untill your buddys see you with them.

Buy an SKS. It is a better rifle and easier to field strip.  In my book, the SKS is the best rifle and bang for the buck of any cheap rifle you can buy!

Good rifle, but You should have a few other good rifles first.
The SKS is better at the same price, if you need a gun.
The Hi-point is good for the price if you need a hobby gun, and already have those better guns.

hipoints ugly as sin, the kel-tec seem to be practical (folding and takes glock mags). Im really into
9mm 40cal carbines, they are soooo fun the shoot and with 9mm 100 value packs, it almost like plinking with 22 (almost)

The part I like is rapid fire at an object (just rips and throw shit everywhere) and the sound of a 9mm going down range spinning out of a 16 in barrel is PRICELESS

Buy the hipoint and have fun throwing lead

I second the SKS... they can be had cheaper than $169 with a little looking, 7.62x39 is about the only centerfire caliber that can be had cheaper than 9mm, and there's way more in accessories available for it.  The only downsides I see are that it's a little bigger, and you probably won't find many indoor ranges that will allow a centerfire rifle.

I reccomend you look into the Kel Tec, it is relatively accurate, comes in many different magazine types so you can use your 9MM handgun mags, is easy to clean, and does this.....

I bought a Hipoint last year and think that as a plinker it is great.  Mine has the laser on it and it was right on at 50 yards when I first shot it.  I now use it instead of my 22lr when I go outside at night to check on my poultry flock when old Mr. Raccoon...Coyote...fox...etche

Cool... the one at the local fun shop has a 4x scope on it and they want just over 200... decent price?

Get a Vector Arms UZI $600, more fun than 6 hipoints!

I made the mistake of the of buying a hipoint 995 carbine in 9mm.  First time I took it to the range the first shot blew out the internals.  Needless to say I was very disappointed.  I sent it back to Hipoint for their lifetime warranty (which is nice needless to say) and was fixed, but the problems listed that were fixed required a full sheet of paper!  They did give me two extra clips for my trouble, but I said to hell with this and sold it.  Stay away from that.  Save your money for a CX4 or some other well built gun.

i wonder if anyone saying anything negative has actually shot/owned one, it seems anyone who flat out states they have one is very happy with it, myself included. sure its ugly but its a lot of fun, pretty accurate and still cheap to shoot.

Get one!

I've handled several (never shot one ), and the purchase on them feels like holding a well used playstation controller.

How does that affect shooting w/o good gloves?

Well the real question is do you want one?  I've got a buddy who occaisonly shoots a hipoint in three-gun.  You should see the look on someone's face when a man with a $150 "piece of crap" beats a man with a $1500 AR.  It is priceless.  My self I went with the Kel-Tec sub200. I don't think there's anything wrong with either one, and with my kel-tec I can put a 15 rd berretta mag into a paperplate offhand at 100 yds.  So it's good enough.

When my son turned 9 last year he got a chance to shoot one. He decided he wanted to buy one with his birthday money. We paid $160 IIRC at a local gunshow. The gun is not the best rifle on the planet but it is fun to shoot. I put a cheap red dot on the it, and it is quite accurate considering the company that makes it. I think it is a great little carbine for the money. My biggest complaint is that the extra mags run about $22 a piece. You would think with the rifle being so inexpensive the mags would be a little cheaper. I would definitely rank it as a fun gun to shoot.

There pistols still suck though.

I have a Hipoint, have put aprox. 500 rounds through it and have had NO FAILURES, nice shooter, only problem I have is the fact that you are limited to ten round mags...

it amazes me...that the company didnt try something like using a mag frame like a BHP..or something.
there are thousands of BHP mags out there..15-30 rounders..

doesnt the kel tecs use a glock mag..
7/13/2004 10:44:03 PM EDT

the keltecs will take a glock or beretta mag, depending on the model.
7/13/2004 11:12:50 PM EDT

Beretta Storm -> better, takes hi-cap mags (20s and 30s), etc...

Or just get a Mech-Tech CCU for your favorite semiauto pistol...

I've shot one and hit targets out to a hundred yards. I still have to much self respect to buy one. A buddy of mine owned one, the thing shot fine till it broke some 400rds later.
