I want to get my gf (and myself) a Kel-Tec P3AT for V-day. I will also be buying us concealed carry classes along with it. But, knowing my gf, she will immediately want to put it in her car....and keep it there.
So my question is, is what exactly "concealed" means. can she carry the loaded gun in her car? or does she need the license first? i know she cant carry it around with her in her purse.....but the car is all i care about for now. |

She can keep it anywhere in the car loaded and ready to go but it must be concealed. Concealed in the eyes of the law can be glove box all the way to on the seat with a towel over it. The law here in Texas was changed in Sept 2007 from having to cross counties to anytime because the burden of proof was with the state to prove you were not crossing counties. The old way was really complicated also so they simplified it to anytime but it MUST be concealed. She canNOT get out of her car with it and carry it till she completes and recieves her CHL.
So she is good to go if she wants to carry it around in her car. If she is pulled over she is not required to state she has the handgun unless asked by the officer and she better tell the truth or they will be pissed if they do find it. Once you get your CHL you MUST hand over the CHL license when you are stopped and when the officer asks where it is you have to tell him. She can carry it in her purse so long as you is in her car if she exits her car with it without a CHL she is illegally carrying. Hope this clarifies plus the CHL handbook and the instructor will go over it. You can also access the concealed handgun from the DPS website. |

She can now legally carry the handgun loaded in the car without a license in Texas. Same holds true in New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. Not sure about other states. Texas law changed a couple years ago to allow folks to carry a handgun in their car. Prior to the new law, one had to have a CHL or be "travelling" which generally meant 2 or more counties crossed in the trip. Just bought my wife a P3AT for Christmas and we sent it to GoldenLoki.com for a fluff & buff and to Duracoat the slide PINK. She's excited...but then again she'll be carrying it Inside the Waistband (IWB). If I was looking for a car gun or my first carry gun, it sure wouldn't be a P3AT. The P3AT is for times when you can't carry a bigger gun. Lots of autopistols are easier to control than a P3AT. ETA: Looks like I was slow on posting...buy it also appears most of us are in agreement. You can carry without a CHL in the car but if you are going to leave a gun in the car most the time, get a bigger gun....i.e. at least a 9mm or 38 Special...and bigger if she can handle it. -David Edgewood, NM |

if its strictly going to be a car gun, why not get her something more substantial than a p3at? only reason i'd personally get one is to pocket carry. also carrying laws vary from state to state as mentioned above. Yeah he is Texas like you and me! aww shit! i'm on one of the super secret team only websites and can't see his state! OP, click here http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/, for code, select penal. for article/chapter, click chapter 46. weapons then click go (you don't have to select a art./sec. ETA: Sec. 46.02. (a-1) A person commits an offense if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries on or about his or her person a handgun in a motor vehicle that is owned by the person or under the person's control at any time in which: (1) the handgun is in plain view; or (2) the person is: (A) engaged in criminal activity, other than a Class C misdemeanor that is a violation of a law or ordinance regulating traffic; (B) prohibited by law from possessing a firearm; or (C) a member of a criminal street gang, as defined by Section 71.01. (a-2) For purposes of this section, "premises" includes real property and a recreational vehicle that is being used as living quarters, regardless of whether that use is temporary or permanent. The term includes a travel trailer, camping trailer, truck camper, motor home, and horse trailer with living quarters.(b) Except as provided by Subsection (c), an offense under this section is a Class A misdemeanor. Not sure about other states.. -David Edgewood, NM Correct, but even if legal, different states have different rules. For example in AZ it has to be in a holster, case, glove box, console, or (just added) map pocket. (on the dash, unholstered is a violation. On the dash holstered is good to go) |

My ex could have carried two 50AE Desert Eagles in her purse easy. |

I would think a Kel-tec PF-9 or Glock 26 would be vastly superior for purse carry. PF-9 is about $30 higher than a P3AT. Glock 26 is easier to shoot well than either Kel-tec and reliable out of the box. My wife carries a Smith & Wesson Model 60 (Stainless Steel 5-shot Revolver) 357 Magnum in her purse. She just wanted the Kel-tec for carrying when she's in workout gear. An S&W Airweight or Taurus Ultralight (preferably shrouded hammer) would also be a great purse gun if she wants to save weight...a revolver is much more reliable firarm for purse carry...getting a gum wrapper stuck in something is unlikely to cause any problems, plus you can fire a DAO revolver from inside the purse and it'll keep working...with a P3AT, not so much. http://www.goldenloki.com/gallery.htm -David Edgewood, NM |

id find a p3at localy from an arfcommer and have her test shoot it first, bought the wife one and she HATES it, but I now pack it around lots in a wallet type holster. the recoil on it is kidna unfreindly but it is a decent shooter, if it is a car gun space isnt a problem and thus something easier /larger to shoot as .380 is marginal as a SD round.
