The majority of my handguns are 9mm, but I do have a HK Tactical.  I shoot every week and am having a tough time finding 9mm - even if it's at outrageous prices.  The local stores all seem to have .40 and every now and then have .45. I stock my ammo pretty deep, but I'm growing concerned that I need another caliber since ammo is still hard to come by.  WIth that in mind, I'm looking at a purchasing a new .40 since it appears to be readily available and is less expensive than .45.

I'm a Glock fan in 9mm, but I've heard that a 9mm Glock is perfection, but the .40s aren't.  Problems with lights/lasers, kabooms with reloads, etc.  So what would you recomend for $1k or less.  $1k including gun, and 5 mags.  Sig?  HK 40 - or should I skip the .40 and go with a .45 - maybe a HK Compact or Compact Tactical and only have to stock 9mm and .45?

$33 or thereabouts, pretty standard price for most pistols.

for a CCW sized .40, look for a Star Firestar M40. they are out of production but are pretty nice little guns!

If you want a 40 for under $1k, there are some good options.

M&P40 is a solid choice.  If it were me getting a 40, I'd probably go for a CZ 75.

I absolutely love Glocks, but I think I would go M&P in your situation.  I don't have one, but our SD recently switched.  All the guys and gals seem to really like them.  They fit my hand great, need to shoot one.

HK makes a good weapon but mags are pricey.....

Factory mags are $24.95 at OMBexpress.com. Right now they only have 10 rounders in stock but they sell the high caps at the same price and usually stock them.

My full size M&P .40 is my daily carry and it's been exemplary so far as accuracy and reliability which has been 100% out of the box for 3500 rounds so far.

All steel 1911 in .45 ACP, Browning/FN Hi-Power in .40 (though it only holds 10rds, and I like the 9mm Hi-Power better), and CZ 75B in .40, would be my top three recommendations for your situation, in that order.  There are plenty of other good options (M&P is interesting to me), but those are my top three.

S&W M&P full or compact
SIG P229
HK USP40 f or c

These are what I'd be looking at in .40 right now.

As for Glock 40s, the Gen4 is coming with a dual recoil spring set-up that is supposed to reduce some of the frame battering and solve the mounted light issue. Of course, if .40 kabooms are your fear I'm not aware that anything has changed as far as case support is concerned.

A CPO Sig p229 sells for about $550.  Great value.

The M&P .40 would also be a good choice.
