I currently have a Kahr P9. I bought it because it was both comfortable as a range
gun and carry piece. I wanted to buy a Colt Defender or Kimber Ultra carry 45 but decided it may be funny to have 2 carry size guns. Do most people have similiar carry size weapons, or do you guys like a variation in pistol sizes. Maybe this is just my OCD kicking in but it is on my mind. |

That depends. Do you want to be able to carry this second handgun as well?
This really depends on your priorities apropos of your handgun "collection." Once it gets large enough, you'll have full-size, compact, and sub-compact handguns in your collection. If you're happy carrying your P9 and want a range shooter, then look for a full-size you like. If your want a different carry option, then go for a compact. What are your goals? |

I enjoy range shooting especially since I am introducing my son to the sport.
I may just buy a full size 1911 since I am more than happy with my P9. I think sometimes the 9mm vs. 45acp comes to mind. I am sure with the right ammo the 9mm would be fine and do the job if needed. Thanks for the help. Natron |

There are great 9mm loads out there that will perform very well for defense. If you're happy with the P9 for carry, I think a full-size 1911 would be a great addition for a range shooter. Regarding your son––how old is he? How much shooting has he done so far? Has he shot your P9? Perhaps you should consider a .22 handgun instead or as well. |

I took him out the first time the 4th of July. He shot the P9 and it did scare him a bit. I have been considering a 22 handgun...Any suggestions. Natron |

Well, I don't think you can go wrong with a Ruger for a .22 auto. Most here prefer the Mark II, but I have a Mark III 22/45 and I like it a lot. I like the thinness of the grip and the more upright 1911 grip angle. They're very accurate and reliable.
I've also been running a AA .22 conversion in my G19 lately as a training tool and I like this a lot as well. I believe there are 22 conversions out there for the 1911. I've no experience with them, but if you got a 1911 this could be a good option to allow you and your son to shoot .22s through the the 1911 as well as .45. |

everyone needs at least 1 full sized GI style 1911. lol, I agree, but until I can afford all of the guns I want, I shoot a compact pistol for both range and CCW as well. I like the idea of the 3" 1911 myself, but it just seems to go against the whole idea of owning a 1911. OP, I'm thinking the same as you, but I think i'm getting an officer's or commander's sized 1911 so that It can be carried occasionally. A fullsize is nice too, but I want a nice classic colt for that job. I'm thinking of the the Dan Wesson CBOB myself for officer's sized. Until then my Hk p7 will do everything I need it to do. I see that you live in florida and I would think that the climate to carry an officer sized or even a 3" gun would be equally elusive and limited. I could probably get away with CCW a fullsize 1911 around here in CT half the year, but it would not be comfortable. A officer sized would be no issue though. The 3" just seems too limited for me, but I do like the Colt Defender and the New Agent. |

I think the Dan Wesson you mentioned is a Commander size.
If you already have one carry gun and nothing else, I would either get a .22 or another carry gun (2 is 1 concept). If I had a young son, I would get the 22. I have a Buckmark and a Single Six. The Single Six is insanely acurrate. My father has a 22/45 and it is fine as well. Nothing beats a 22 for learning good habits cheaply. If you want a 1911, I would also suggest you get a government or commander size. 1911 designs under 4 inches are frequently problematic and not nearly as much fun to shoot. For concealed carry, an alloy frame commander is a great choice and still fun to shoot. |

I have been considering a 22 handgun...Any suggestions. Natron[/quote] Make sure whatever you buy won't be too heavy for your son. I bought a Beretta Neos because of the smaller grip (for my son and wife) but didn't really consider the forward weight. It's a bit heavy for him right now. No problems with the gun and have ~2,500 rounds through. It's a bit cheaper than the others. Walther p22 would be a nice choice too. |
