It's red because at the same time that Springfield was selling the P9 they were also offering a colored polymer type coating for guns.

There was a big write-up in The American Handgunner about it.  They pictured Springfield guns in all types and combinations of colors.
One picture was a candy apple red 1911 in a basket of red apples, a red, white, and gold 1911, and various OD Green guns.
As I recall, one customer had had an AK-47 coated with shocking pink.  He used the AK as a home defense gun and was prepared for some lawyer to try holding it up to a jury and claim it was some horrible "assault weapon".

For a short time until the original Springfield went bust, you saw some strangely colored Springfield guns. People always want something "different" to make their gun exclusively "theirs".

Hmm... I was unaware of that.  I had walked past that exact gun in the display case a few months ago, and saw the tag that said something to the effect of "RARE FACTORY FINISH!!!!"  I just about rolled over laughing in the aisle, because I thought it was just Duracoat or something.
