What is more important to you?

Getting the handguns you want or getting "like" handguns that can share mags in case of a SHTF situation.

I'm struggling with this.  I'm having a hard time choosing between keeping purchases grouped to share mags in a SHTF situation or to just say F it and get the handguns I've always wanted.

I have a real hard time with a goal of 4-8 of the same gun when I could have other guns that I actually want.

What say you?

BOTH, of course.

I want one (or two) of everything and several of the ones I really use.

I'm poor, so if I buy two different handguns that share the same mag, better for me. If I had more money, it wouldn't matter, but as it stands, I like to have 10 mags per handgun.

They are one in the same, I buy what I want and they happen to be the same.

I'd have to say both. I purchased several Glocks for magazine/parts commonality, etc. and now feel free to purchase handguns I just like.

I do not purposely go for a hangun simply because it uses some mags or some parts that are common to some other handgun I already own. However, since I like to stick to certain platforms, it just works out that way.

However, I do "enforce" caliber commonality on my new purchases. If it's not 9x19mm or .45ACP, I'm not really interested. (The primary exception being the upcoming Fortis in 10mm, which I will definitely be buying.)

I got the Sig Sauer P220 platform as I can use the magazines in my full size P220R or my P220 Carry.  My Glock 26 can also use my Glock 19 magazines.

I try to share calibers, but not mags. Although it does suck to have to add $150 every time I buy a new gun.  Sometimes I just buy something on a whim, sometimes I research it for weeks.  I saw the poly .45 witness online today, looked cool, so ordered it just because-fuck it.

Was going to buy $400 worth of ammo, nothing looked like a great deal, went to Buds-sort by .45-sort by price, scrolled, that looks cool, click buy it now.

Others I'll get stuck on 12 different models(like a 1911) and cant decide for weeks, sometimes months before buying it.

I strongly feel there's value when the shit hits the fan to have pistols and rifles with common calibers, mags, and parts together.
It will only make things easier in the long run and has made things easier now. I've bought my purchases around this aspect, but it's not like I didn't buy firearms I like best either.

I buy what I like.  Then I get spare parts and a bunch of mags.

I stick to 9mm and .45 for the most part but, .40 and .38/.357 are in there just for fun.  I'm not adding any more pistol calibers for a while.

Eh, get what you want.  I've got 4 handguns and only two share the same CALIBER, much less magazines.

My post-Obama purchases have been:

Glock 19
S&W 442 Airweight
Springfield XD9

I carry a S&W titanium PD .38 and a SIG 228.

I kinda just get whatever seems appropriate at the moment.

The XD9 came today courtesy of a friend who bought an XDM9, shot some 2" groups with it at 25 yards, decided to sell his XD9 and get another XDM9.  He wanted $325 for the XD9, 3 hi-cap mags, the factory case, a Blackhawk Serpa holster.  I jumped at the offer.

I couldn't agree more.

All 16 firearms in the picture below use Glock mags; 13 of them take the exact same mags/ammo...

... and I've added another G19 (and a few more mags
) since it was taken.
(ETA: Please don't make fun of the picture –– it was taken, half-jokingly, as a direct response to a challenge here.

I agree with the caliber standard. I have settled on 9m, 45 and 357/38. It's not easy to stick with that though. You have to add in the long gun stuff and then I am stocking something like 7 or 8 different calibers. When I started, the goal was to keep it to 2 or 3 but found it impossible over time.

Maybe I should sell some off to simplify...on the other hand a 10mm sounds like fun....

I buy what I like and also buy at least 10 mags for each handgun I own. Since I like variety I know not everyone will have what I have and that's why its important to have a good quantity on hand already in case SHTF. I already have 7 mags for my HK  USP 9 and 5 mags for my FNP40, both the HK and FN mags cost around $40 each , but I still love them . I don't have a semi-auto rifle yet, kind of addicted to Marlin Lever Actions at the moment, but I am looking at the JLD PTR-91 .

Commonality of mags has been important to me for rifles, but my handgun purchases have been all over the board...leading to a lot of "magging up" for handguns.

I voted for the second option. However, the Hi Power's the only pistol I care for, cuz I'm that damn picky. That kinda makes logistics simple. The only other handguns I want are revolvers, so no need to worry about magazine compatibility.
