So I am really interested in two pistols:  one is a Kimber TLE/RL (stainless) and the other is a HK USP tactical.  Both are chambered in .45ACP.  This would also happen to be my first pistol.

You never asked a question.

Assuming you want advice on which one to choose, what is the gun going to be used for? Home protection? CCW? Range gun?

If I had to choose between them I would take the H&K over the Kimber. Reliability and firepower being the foremost reasons.

I haven't owned a Kimber but my Father-in-law does, was his first pistol. Seems to be picky about mags and he says it's difficult to take-down.(don't know?). I would think the HK would be a better first pistol. Would also check out Glock, XD and M&P, latter two available w/ thumb safety if you like.

Just to confuse, I'll throw my vote in for the Kimber.  Can't go wrong with a 1911.  It was the first gun I ever shot.  Everyone should learn to shoot and dissasemble a 1911.

The HK is a bit overpriced and doesn't feel as nice to me.

22.  Revolver or semi, your choice.  Work on site picture, trigger squeeze, breath control, safe handling.  Then move up.

Get the USP TACTICAL, and while you're at it form/start a trust so you can put a "can" on her if you haven't done so already. From the look at prices it appears they are both pretty close in price BUT the HK does come with a threaded barrel.

I second the realistic but not macho enough opinion.

I'll give a third on this.

Go with the HK.

The HK is a good gun, but I love 1911s. Also the USP 45 is a little big in the grip (I have small hands) and a 1911 feels right at home.
