What is the lightest (or some of the lightest) 9mm's available?  I know the Kel-Tech  P11 comes in at 14oz.  Anything lighter out there?  The main reason is I want a handgun for backpacking and I'm very particular about adding any weight to my pack.

I have a Glock 19 right now, but it's more weight then I want to pack.

A Glock 19 too heavy???? Are you built like an 8 year old girl? Just kidding.

How about a Glock 26? Maybe a Khar? What do you plan to use it on if needed? 9mm is not the best choice for a mountain gun if animals are your biggest worrie.

I have my pack plus carry a Smith and Wesson 629 44mag.....and I feel my .44 is to "weak" for a mountain gun.

My 2 year old daughter weights more than me if that's what you mean.  I should probably hit the gym.

No, seriously, the Glock 19 is lightweight and I have taken this on backpacking trips in the past.  I just want something lighter.  I don't consider myself an ultra light hiker, but not far from it.  My goal is to reduce weight and travel further.

With that said, my primary concern is protection from crazy people, not so much animals.  In my area the only animals I really worry about are bears and I'm not willing to carry a 4 lbs. gun to protect myself from them.  Shit, that's like 20% of my pack weight.

The Kahr PM9 is 14oz and the CW9 is 15.8 here.

Or consider a Scandium S&W revolver. The .357s are between 13-14oz. A lot of firepower in a very small and light package if you can handle them.

These are some great suggestions.  Thanks!

+1 here.
I would definatly look into kahr, light and accurate in all the major calibers.

You should also seriously consider a revolver seeing as how you will be carrying it in a pack and depending on how long you are out it may get dirty and you most likely do not want to carry cleaning products with you. A revolver would be a more reliable choice in a situation where you do not want to put the effort into maintaining the weapon on a backpacking trip.

The Walther PPS is a great pistol. In 9mm, 8+1 rds of  ammo. +P  is fine.

Accurate and reliable. About the same size as a PPK/S. Very slim, about 1" wide.

Weight is about 22 oz with loaded magazine.
