I am looking to buy a .38 revolver, probably a small snub-nose type, but I have very limited knowledge on revolvers...I am solely a glock/sig/hk guy.

It will be used for target practice and carry.

I am leaning towards S&W, but am open to any suggestions.

It would be good to spend around $500 or less if possible.

Thanks!

S&W makes a number of good, small .38 revolvers. I have a 638 which basically has a fully shrouded hammer but also allows you to cock it for single action shooting. I think I paid $350 OTD for mine.

$500 will get you a good revolver! For wheelguns of that size, I'd stick with S&W; I carry a 640 and love it!

I would go for the .357 Magnum though; you can shoot .38s with it and it won't matter at all, and then change to .38+P or .357 if you wish.

Is the S&W 640 in .357 a lot larger in size than the .38 S&W 640?

Pocket carry would be nice.

Only the cylinder length is different, IIRC?

One thing to study on is whether or not you might prefer a hammerless snubbie or a bobbed hammer for "pocket" carry. A normal spur hammer will NOT be the best candidate for "pocket" carry.

S&W does make a Bodyguard model that actually gives the best of both worlds, a semi-bobbed hammer. This way one can cock it for a single action pull if they choose to do so. The downside is, there's not a lot of holster options for these models. They're out there, but you may have to get them on-line.

You might wish to hit the S&W web site for some ideas on what your options are, IMO.

Good luck!
