Hey folks just turned 21 and can finally get a handgun. Went window shopping (but the selection was small) to price check and look at whats on the market today, and now I'm seek knowlegde from the all great arfcom. So I need some help picking out my first piece. Price limit is $750. First off, NO GLOCKS! looked at the XD(didn't like the trigger deal) and M&P(I think I'm in love) but will consider other handguns. Second, can't decide what caliber to get. Leaning twords the .40 but why not just go to the .45 then? So let me know what ya think and will take any advise I can get. |
Sorry you didn't like the XD. They work 100% (usually). And you can get a good deal for $500; the gun + trigger job should't cost more than your price limit. Glocks: I have no opinion about them except that when I shot one, the grip angle was not right for me. As for caliber: .45 is probably more readily available than .40, so I recommend you go for that. 1911s: They are wonderful guns to shoot, but I keep seeing too many stories of people who buy high-end guns and then need to have them worked on to make them reliable. I have a WWII-vintage Ithica that I smithed to 100% reliability and have no qualms about CCWing with it. The Baby Desert Eagle is my 3rd CCW gun. Mine is an earlier model with a frame safety; I detest the decocker/slide safety. The BDE is a true single/double action pistol. |

eayyy welcome to my boat! i'd look into the FNP45 dude. 14+1 of holy shit! USP accurate but with a nice trigger. with the flat backstrap the trigger reach is good. i too wasn't wow'd by the XD45, and was looking for more than the glock offered. MP45 does look like it'd feel nice. For 750 a springfield loaded i think is in your range- a sig 1911 can be too. why do i like 1911's? shoot one. you'll see the .40's a good round too. btw: i had the XD45 i tried out malf nearly every mag on me - any company can make a lemon!

there are a lot of options out there...it might help also, would this gun be for anything specific (say future CCW, car gun, home, etc?) that said, i'd consider HK, Sig, the MP (since it seems you like it), and if you want, 1911s; FNs, Rugers, CZs, and Berettas are also great brands and offer very decent models in .40sw and some .45acps i would not consider Taurus--YMMV |
a family member has a taurus raging bull- its 100% . and i've HEARD their 1911's are good, but i'm not sure i'd gamble on my first gun with it. really nowadays the odds of getting a lemon are few and far between. all the companies have to order a usually good product or they won't survive (just ask vulcan/hesse arms!). i'd go with a .45 but thats just me... my top contenders for the pistols on my mind? Springfield Armory MC operator FNP45 SW MP45 HK45 HK USP45 tactical kimber warrior (some here bash kimbers, others will vouch for them) Springfield armory TRP Sig P220 Sig P220 match wilson combat KZ45 les baer concept SW1911 Sig revolution 1911 |
Exactly. If you don't believe in the big hole theory with today's modern ammo and wany 87+1 capacity, then 9mm is the way to go. If you believe in the big hole theory then .45 is the way to go. Simple enough. |

This is not my auction. This is in the ballpark and a good choice for first gun in .45 www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=106298091 For a bargain, I like these. I did change the grips on mine. www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=106669598 |
| I just purchased an FNP-45 and it is a great pistol at $550. It comes with 3-14 round magazines, two different back-straps, a gun lock and a HUGE gun case. However, if you haven't purchased an semi-auto pistol previously, it's hard to go wrong with a Glock 19 (9mm). |
+1 You got to go with what you like. Everybody is different. Personally, I get more excited about a nice Smith and Wesson revolver than I do almost any semi-auto. Also, when looking at semi-autos, I prefer metal guns to plastic guns (though I do own a Glock). Again, it's just personal taste. Don't talk yourself out of what YOU really want, just because of what someone else likes. If you think the Browning High Power is the definition of ultra-cool, you'll never be happy with a Sig (or vice versa). As for caliber, the BIG advantage of 9mm over .40 is the cost of shooting. |

My vote is with a 9mm CZ-75. For your first handgun, IMO you're better off getting the hang of handgunning with a cheaper caliber. 9mm costs about 2/3s as much as .45. CZ makes some great guns. They also make a full-size .45 that is AWESOME! You just need to have big hands. CZ Handguns |
