My dad is looking to buy a .45ACP handgun andme and him were trying to decide what to get.  He wants a gun that is full size. He was looking at the G21, becaquse of price and that I have a G23 that is excellent.  What guns are at the top of the list?  He isn't concerned about weight or features. Price, depenadliltiy and accuracy are the priorities.

I am a big Glock guy but if looking for a non-1911 .45acp today I think I would have to look really hard at the S&W M&P. Feels good, price is right, is dependable and the trigger can be improved if, like me, you are not a fan of the mushy reset...very nice package IMO.

i would find a range with rental guns and do some testing on what they have.  it will give you an opportunity to actually TRY and not just buy from what other people say.

I think you will find that there are many choices out there and it will all depend on YOUR preferences.  Especially YOUR dads since he will probably be the one handing over the $$$.

Rent & try before yo buy.

I'm a big fan on the new HK45.

+1 on the HK45

Easy, XD45.

But if you already have a G23, keep it simple and get a G21SF.

if you must have a .45 id go with the HK45. dont bother with the xd, too much crap you dont need and its just not the quality of an H&K.

What price range? Double stack or single stack? SA, DA/SA, DAO?

Lots of variation in there. Without any other details to go off of, I say a Colt 1991 Government. Relatively inexpensive, accurate, dependable, and a great platform for future customization. However, purchase in person or from a particularly reputable mail-order dealer, due to the possiblity of minor QC issues that have been cropping up (immediately apparent on first inspection... and from what I've seen, already less prevalent than they were a short while ago)

I beg to differ owning the XD45, HK45, and HK45c.  I think they are very comparable.

badshooter, as you see, people are very opinionated in their choices of firearms (when you find something that works for you, it is hard not to be). However, if your father likes your G-23, perhaps he should try a G-21SF. All of the other pistols recommended in this thread are quality pistols and each deserves consideration, but in reality your father really should try several different pistols if possible to find the one that he likes best.

I'm sure your dad would be happy with any of the pistols listed. There's a lot of high-quality guns out there. I am a big Glock fan, though.

i agree check out the xd .45 that would be my first choice. if not a 1911. if a 1911 will work for you that is a whole other thread there in itself.

A big +1 to all of that.

If it fits his hands well, and he likes the trigger, and it just feels right, then it is the pistol for him.

At one point in time I had convinced myself that I really wanted a P38 and was actively pricing them.  I went to an indoor range that rented them...and changed my mind.  I will eventually buy one, but it has tumbled to the very bottom of the want list.

YMMV

If price is a main concern, the HK45 probably isnt what he is looking for.  Granted, it would easily be my number one recommendation for a .45 right now, but seeing as price is an issue Id have to recommend something in the sub $500 range.

The way I see it, if he goes with Glock, an XD, or the S&W M&P he will be happy.   Its all about finding what he likes the most.

Not to mention they are hundreds of dollars cheaper.... come with a lifetime warranty are dead nuts reliable, accurate....

Hmmm...full size and not hard on the wallet? Hard to beat a Ruger P90 in that criteria.

The usual suspects are:

XD45
M&P 45
Glock 21

Pick one of those.

I'm a XD person.  I have a XD45 Tactical and XD45 Service.  I think the XD's the best option for tupperware pistols out there.  YMMV

I would vote XD45 Tactical, that's my fav. I've also heard alot about the S&W M&P. I would also agree to rent or borrow before buying. Good luck and happy shooting.

XD .45 Tactical.

Go to a range and try out both. During one trip I tried out a glock and an XD. The XD ergonomics fit me better, so I ended up buying one.

If you can afford an HK45, then I would definitely go with that.  IMO, it is the best combat .45 under $900 today and it comes with a lifetime warranty that you will most likely never need.

Same here.  My initial plan was to pick up an xd as my first pistol, but as soon as I held that HK, I knew all plans had changed.

My vote is for the XD .45 and comes in Tactical 5", Service 4" and compact.Three different size choices depending on what its main purpose is.
