so i want to build up a 1911 im not a gunsmith but i do have access to tons of tools and ill work on it when i have available time and money much like i did when i built my first rifle im a college student so im definately on a budget but heres what i had in mind, you 1911 guys help me out here i was gonna buy a cheap pistol like this 1911 or a tarus 1911 then once i actually get the pistol itself start trading out the parts to refine it into a nice shooting gun i know these guns are fairly complex and require tuning and attention to detail but thats the whole reason im wanting to get into this project kinda like building up an old muscle car any advice? |

If you're gonna build up an old muscle car, you don't start with a Vega! If you're looking at a serious project in which you plan to make a NICE 1911 that will last a lifetime, you have to start with quality parts. That means key components made of quality materials that are in spec - don't matter how many whiz bangs you snap into a project, if the frame holes are off the frame holes are off. Now if you want to start out with an RIA or some such as a "learner gun" it's not a bad plan - just don't sink a lot of money into it. 1911s do require a lot of tuning and knowledge, but it's not that anything you need a mechanical engineering degree to figure out. Get the Kuhnhausen books on the 1911 for starters. Before you perform any work be sure you understand what all the potential ramifications of that work will be - 1911s have quite a few parts that serve multiple purposes, and you don't want to enhance one aspect of function while destroying another. |
Totally agree with him and why don't you buy an already custom version? I mean instead of having difficulties. I tried that and the stupid performance guide rod spring flied away and I never found it so a Czech gunsmith friend of mine customized it from me. I dunno what it is with those Czechs and guns. |
