Glock 19, Springfield XD in 9mm or 45, or Springfield Armory 1911 Combat operator?
I think the 1911 is called that. It has nite sights, wood grips, picatinny rail, and a suhweet trigger. It is smaller than the full size 1911....barrel looks to be about 3.5-4 inches.

I'm a 1911 nut, but I would suggest a S&W J-frame.

This is not my first handgun as I have and do own many. At present I carry a Ruger P89DC but as the temp rises it will be a lot harder to conceal. I also have full size Berettas and a Taurus 605 357. I can shoot them all very well and all are 100% reliable. The wife carries the 605, so I'm looking for something smaller for myself. I want an auto because it is much easier for me to carry and conceal spare ammo (mags instead of speed strips or speed loaders) and its also much easier to unload and lock up and then unlock and reload an auto when traveling into or through a state that does not allow concealed carry

Try the XD and M&P if you wish.  IMO they're good guns but I prefer Glock and carry a 23, same size as 19 but a 40

What type and brand of holsters do all of you use to conceal your Glocks My gun dealer is willing to make me a deal on a desert camo Glock in 40 cal (I can't remember the model, sorry) because he's had it for a while and everyone that picks it up doesn't like the way it feels because you can only get two fingers around the grip w/o an extended mag. That, and nobody likes the color of it I can get it for whatever he has in it..which is somewhere in the upper $400 range.

sounds like a subcompact model (G27 if its in .40sw)

does it have a custom paint job, or is it just the frame thats in destert tan (factory probably then)?

is it used? night sights? whats w/. the package? $400+ would be a very decent price if its "loaded" w/ some stuff...fair if its used and by itself

as to CCW holsters, i'd recommend the Threat Soulutions UCR, CompTac (CTAC and MTAC--my choice), and milt sparks VM II

currently, i run w/ a comptac/UCR hybrid i created

I carry a 1911, G19, or HK .45 depending on how I feel that day.  My favorite is the 1911.  It is heavy, but for some reason it just feels right.

Man, thats tough, those are all good choices. Honestly though, I would probably go G19 or XD. I know which paint job your talking about, it looks like the old school Desert Storm era chocolate chip desert camo. I have seen some G17's with that paintjob at Cabelas. If you like it, then go for it. I thought it was ugly as hell, and it will definetly hurt resale. Then again, im a basic black kinda guy, and tastes do vary.

Glock 19.

If it's going to be used for defense, do the following:
1) Replace shitty stock glock sights with proper steel sights (preferably night sights.  I like XS Big Dot sights  )*
2) Don't f**k with the standard parts beyond the sights.  Extended slide stops, mag releases, trigger weights and all the other thousands of aftermarket accessories are crap will make the gun less reliable.
3) Personally, I'm a fan of the 9mm glocks - specifically the Glock 19.  The .40 round has a severe pressure curve that breaks guns (glocks as well as others) and I don't shoot it as well as 9 or 45.
4) Use FACTORY Glock parts - no aftermarket stuff (except the sights)
5) Get a good holster (Comp-Tac CTAC or Blade Tech IWB. have a lot of users that swear by them).  I like the CTAC.  I also picked up a Raven Concealment Systems holster and mag carrier - very slick, comfortable design and I like it a lot.  It may be replacing the CTAC.
6) Get good self defense ammo and run at least a box through your gun to check for reliability (some guns are notoriously finicky with ammo - I have heard of VERY few glocks with ammo sensitivity issues FWIW)  Look HERE for "Best Choices for Self-Defense Ammunition"
7) Get some formal training with a decent firearms school.  IM me if you'd like some recommendations.
8) Glocks are the "AK" of handguns - they tend to work very reliably and go down a lot less than other types of handguns.  They ARE man-made mechanical devices and they can break, have jams and get screwed up.  This is why #7 is SO important - so you know what to do IF and WHEN something shitty happens.
9) What breaks on Glocks? anything can - I keep a complete spare parts kit in my range bag - springs, extractor, recoil assembly - basically any small parts I can think of
10) Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

*Why Big Dot Sights?
I've done a lot of Force on Force exercises and scenarios as a student and as a roleplayer.  We've used converted Glock 17s - 2 of them with Big Dots and one of them with Meprolight night sights. By the end of day 1, NO ONE wants to use the standard night sights.  Under stress (even the mock stress of FOF) the eye has a LOT of trouble focusing on your front sight.  With the Big Dot, it provides a MUCH better reference point for where your gun is oriented and where you're going to make hits.

It has the desert storm era chocolate chip camo finish that C_Rion mentioned. It is new...I happened to be there when it came in. Has factory sights. Doesn't come with anything extra than what normally comes with a Glock. It is ugly though.

I would recommend getting the best holster you can.

Check out the Comp CTAC if you wear an undershirt or MTAC if you do not.

Comp-Tac

I am currently concealing a Sig P220 in a MTAC wearing a T shirt and cargo pants.

You could get a G27, black, for $500 even, or one with night sights for around $570.

Unless you love the finish, "upper 400" is not a screaming deal.

Also, I would recommend looking at 9mm rather than 40, unless you are a LEO and carry a 40 for duty.

I carry my G26 in a CTAC; I bet I'd carry my Kimber more if I had a better IWB holster for it.

I don't love the finish at all and I think I will not go for that particular one. I too have been really leaning toward the 9mm instead of 40 because I have "food" for the 9 and I just can't seem to want a compact 40. I'm starting to be either a 9mm, 10mm, 45 type for some reason although I do own a 40. What do all fo you think about a 10mm in a compact or subcompact? How's the recoil, accuracy, and price of ammo. I know ammo availabilty isn't like the 9mm, 40 or 45.

puchased a HK P30 yesterday and was able to get 120 rounds through it before the club range closed.  its my first HK and have to say impressive even though I havent carried it yet - but I will once I decide on holsters.   it fits my hand like it was molded to it, dead accurate, reasonable weight (I've carried 1911's, hipowers, walthers, berettas so I know this is fairly light).   I think I'm going to like this first HK a lot.   if you want more info on the P30 guns and ammo mag october 2007 issue had an evaluation of it - by a writer not enamored with HK's - and he loved it.   I'm not knocking any of the other recommendations either.   But for me its got to feel right in my hand and this one does.   If you can try and fire any gun you plan on buying, especially if its a potential carry piece.  enjoy!

10mm compacts or weapons suitable for CCW to my knowledge - Glock 29, EAA Witness Compact and Dan Wesson CBOB 1911.

Ammo is expensive, about twice the cost of 9mm right now. Accuracy should depend on the firearm, but I've seen some tiny 10mm groups. Recoil depends on the weapon as well, but the 10mm's I've fired seemed to recoil more than .45.

My preference would be 9, then 45, then 40. Since you already have a 40, you might consider it. I consider 9 to be a superior round to 40 for carry, though, so I am a little biased.

Well, I went to the shop yesterday with the intent on buying a Glock. But after handling a G19 and XD45 back and forth I ended buying the XD. I liked the Glock and the fact that it has been around, tried an proven, but for the life of me it just wouldn't fit in my hand right. It just felt like the grip was pinching in my palm and no matter which way I tried it would not "seat" good in my hand. I noticed I kept trying to "adjust" my hold and grip on the Glock to get it comfortable. The XD on the other hand fit good. I got the one that has the full capacity magazine to make the grip "service" length and a 10 round mag that keeps the grip "compact". The wind and weather was terrible here yesterday, but I did fire about 100 rounds thru it w/o any problems. Recoil seems less to me than my 40 or the Ruger 9mm. I shot Independence 230FMJ and Magtech Guardian 230gr +P. The Independence stuff shot pretty accurate, but a little to the right. The Magtech seemed to be pretty muc hright on Thanks for all of your suggestions and help everyone. If Glock would change the grip, there WILL be one for me in the future
