My dad needs some more mags for his Ruger P89, and the local Academy has Promags for a good price but from the reviews I’ve read on midway not too many people have good luck with them. I have a 50 round drum for my 10/22 that is a Promag and has run 100%.

Anyone have any first hand experience with them not only for the P89 but other guns and what did you think of them.

Thanks

i have about 12 Promags made in the mid-late 90's for my Sig 228 and they have never let me down, not even one FTF or FTE, NOTHING.  While ive also heard horror stories, my experience has been nothing but positive and  my mags appear to be made better than the Mecgars or Triple K's. Guess you'll just have to buy some and see

Why buy twice?
Don't skimp on your equipment it could let you down at the worst possible time. Have you ever heard of Murphy's Law?

Here is a list of what I've had problems with in the past.

P220 8 and 10 rd
P226
Star Megastar 45
P228

Week springs, wouldnt lock slide back on last round

Sure if the place is reputable, then would take back the defective product, but why bother in the first place?  The cost difference is not that great, and if you factor in your time, your aggravation, and your gasoline used to go back to the store, it cancels the savings out.

Some Promags work, some do not, still others work half-ass, but they are not made to be reliable, they are made to a price point.  Want to bet your life on a price point?

Don't be penny wise and pound foolish.

A Reputable place? Academy sports is a chain sporting goods store guess in Pennsylvania they don’t have them but I’m sure they would take them back.

The P89 was giving to him from a friend after her husband died, and it only has 10 round mags. He wants some high-cap mags. The gun is a range gun, he doesn’t carry it, if something goes bump in the night he grabs his 45colt.

i was looking for first hand experience example to make my decision on purchasing the Promags, not he say she say.

Thanks

I gave you no, he said, she said bullsh*t!  I just did not want to waste my time going into my past, detailing my own ignorance.

I remembered the brand, and the phone calls our sales staff got from the smaller stores whose consumers complained about them from an earlier job working for a major Firearms Distributor.  In spite of this, I decided that the intervening six years was amble time for Promag to improve their QC.  So, with cash in hand, I bought 2 Promags for my Hi-Power at a Gun Show in Allentown, PA back in the Spring of 2003.

Both sucked ass!!  The followers tilted, causing jams, spilling out rounds.  The magazine feed lips spread, causing the top round to spill out.  Finally the back of one the magazines cracked.

With the sunset of the AWB, in 2004, I went out and bought a boatload of MecGar's and Browning factory mags.

I was doing nothing more then attempting to save you and your family some aggravation by giving my opinion of an aftermarket, non OEM, product to you.

I wish you and your father all the best in your purchase and sincerely wish that you get Promags that work.

BTW, I hate the whole "only a range gun so it don't matter" sh*t.  A firearm works, or it does not.

i bought my mags back during the ban when i wasnt going to pay $65 for a factory mag, i carried, used and shot EXTENSIVELY Promags, all worked prefect! that was then, i havent bought a  Promag since the AWB sunset so i cant say if quality was better back in the 90's than now or not, but my expereience is first hand (not i 'heard' they are junk). Id suggest buyin one or two and trying them out, if they work fine, if not, buy another brand....btw, factory ruger mags shouldnt be that hard to find or outlandishly priced..just a  thought and  best of luck.

promags are only half-way tollerable if they are dirt cheap, as range mags, and as something you wouldnt mind risking to waste (i.e: throw away)

imo, spend once, get factory Ruger mags or good, quality aftermarket mags (say from MecGar, if they make em for rugers)

I don't understand the point of "buying them just for range mags"

Money is not easy to come by, your hard earned money should go towards quality.  Don't waste your money on that junk.

I got a Promag 8045 for a Beretta in place of factory magazine from my FFL when he lost the second one I was suppose to get, nothing but problems with it, the tension on the spring is 1/2 of the orginal and all kinds of jams. He said it was just as good (yeah right) haven't been back to him since.

Thank you that’s what I was looking for.
Sorry for being hard headed.

I too don’t like "it’s only a range gun" theory but 80% of the people on this board wouldn’t be caught with a Ruger P series gun in the first place. But maybe if zombies attack then it'll come out of the safe and it'll have 2 dependable 10 round mags.

Im going to tell him to stay away from Promag.

So is the only decent mag for this gun going to be OEM?

Guess im just to spoiled with the endless possibilities of AR mags from multiple manufactures.

Thanks for the other feed back.

I bought 4 of them for my 1911's. They are complete pieces of shit. two of them split, and they would expand when they were loaded so you couldn't get them in the gun, even though they were metal mags. never again!

No problem.  My wife often calls me hard headed.

As for the P-89?  Who cares what AirSoft Mall Ninja's think about it.  It is not a glamorous or pretty pistol, but then I have not found one that is not dead nuts reliable.

As to magazines, I know that MecGar makes the OEM magzines for Browning, but Ruger has their own US production site.  For me, it would be six of one, half dozen of the other.

I did a little web searching and found MecGar magazines for the Ruger P-85/89/93/95 series run from $19.99 to $26.99.  Factory Ruger magazines run from $27.99 to $34.99.

I know that these prices are from 50% to 100% more money than what you can get ProMags for, but how many magazines does your father want?

I'm guessing 2 more so factory ruger mags are not that bad priced. roughly 40 for 2 promags and 70 for OEM, not to bad to have 100% reliability. But with the elections coming up soon he might want more...

Thanks for all the help.
