How does everyone store their handguns in their gun safes?  I'm running out of room with the way I store them, which is just laying them on a shelf.  I've been trying to think of a good way to store them vertically.  Anyone have any good ideas?  Any good do it yourself projects?

Thanks!

I had a local cabinet maker build a pair of stackable shelves with dividers in them. The pistols are laying on their sights.

If you have the vertical room in your safe, drill holes (not all the way through) in a board and glue dowels of appropriate length in the holes.  Finish it however you like but I suggest a plastic coat or two over any varnish.  Put the board on a shelf in the safe and stand the guns on their barrels facing down.  Works great and is a much more efficient use of space.

There are several other ones, but this is the general idea.

I am not sure how big your safe is or how it is laid out, but these might be useful:

Depending on size of your safe, this might work.

I did something similar to the picture above, but not on the door.  I do not have a safe.  I have one of the stack-on brand gun cabinets, the double door model.

The first thing I did was line the whole thing in thin, about 1/4" grey foam.  I ordered a roll of it from an online craft supplier, don't remember the company, but i found it with google.  The cabinet only came with enough foam for the shelves and parts of the walls.  I just used liquid nails projects to attach the foam, but you have to be careful not to press the foam to hard when applying it b/c it will bleed through.

There is a lot of unused space on the back wall.  I hold up the pistol and determine where i want the hangers, then mark with sharpie.  Melt a hole through the foam with a hot nail head.  Drill a hole through the back of the safe.  insert long 1/4-20 bolt and secure with locks, regular washers and nuts.  Sharpie everything black.  Wrap the exposed threads on the bolts with electrical tape to protect the pistols finish.  Then place the pistol on the bolts and you are done.  I only have Glocks right now so I position a bolt in front of the trigger guard and one at the top of the backstrap.  This way the top of the slide is parallel to the ground.

This works great for me.  Maybe it will help some one with a similar cabinet.

I use 2 paper organizers similiar to the one below, across the top shelf of my cabinet. Lets me store upto 10 guns, and magazines stacked behind each gun in its slot.

I have the 4-gun rack. It is great. You can have your handguns right there ready to go and easy to grab. The coating on the rack will not scratch you handgun either. Give one of these a try if you have the room.

+1 for these.  I have 2 pf the 4-gun racks and they work great.  Depending on the height you have available, you can raise the racks by putting them on wood blocks and slide another couple of handguns underneath.

I have this set-up.  I got it from Cannon safe.  Costs maybe 40-50 bucks.  Basically, it's a big velcro sheet that attachs to the interior of the door, with universal nylon holsters that attach to it.  Works great.
